(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zheng Shuchun from Dandong City, Liaoning Province was illegally sentenced to a five-and-a-half year prison term for her faith by the Dandong City Court in March 2017. She had previously been sentenced to a seven year prison term in 2009.
Ms. Zheng has been imprisoned at the Liaoning Women’s Prison in Shenyang City since April 2017. Her family attempted to visit her on May 26, but were refused by the prison officers because Ms. Zheng had refused to renounce Falun Gong.
Team leader Gao and a female prison guard from the eighth prison ward told them that Ms. Zheng had been locked in a small room because she had not given up Falun Gong. The family argued that prison visits are their legal right. Under pressure, Gao and the guard agreed to talk to their leader. However, they returned 30 minutes later and still refused to let the family see Ms. Zheng.
The family decided to go to the prison supervision section to file a complaint. On the way to the office, they happened to see Dai Jing, the director of the eighth prison ward. Dai not only denied all family visits for Ms. Zheng, but also told them it was no use filing a complaint.
The family requested to see the head of the supervision section, but was told he was not in his office. The family emphasized they were worried about Ms. Zheng's wellbeing since she had been tortured during her last imprisonment. They also asked the prison to show any legal provision that justified the visitation denial.
The officials then asked team leader Gao and the same prison guard to check on the situation. Gao returned, but still did not allow the visit. Moreover, they claimed they would not accommodate the family no matter where they filed complaints. They also failed to provide any legal justification for not allowing the family visit.
Eventually, the prison ward agreed to ask Ms. Zheng to call her son at night. Immediately after the family left, the prison ward officials called Ms. Zheng's son and claimed that the family had disturbed their work.
The Liaoning Women's Prison is notorious for persecuting imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners. According to a practitioner's family, when the practitioner mentioned to them during a visit that she wanted to hire an attorney, the prison guard immediately cut off the intercom and beat the practitioner in front of her family.
