Both mother and son are being detained at the Haidian Detention Center in Beijing.

Ms. Chen, in her seventies, lives with her son's family to help take care of her granddaughter. Mr. Li Bin works at Tsinghua University, a well-respected university in China.

Practitioners at Tsinghua University Targeted

The educational institutions in China have been closely monitored by the government since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999. Li Lanqing, head of the 610 Office, is stationed at Tsinghua University, and university officials are expected to assist the 610 Office, or they will lose their jobs.

Approximately 300 teaching staff at Tsinghua, along with graduate and undergraduates students, have lost their jobs or were suspended from school for practicing Falun Gong. Most were sent to brainwashing centers, and at least 16 were imprisoned, and 18 sent to forced labor camps. Many were forced to leave home to avoid arrest.

Ms. Liu Zhimei was one of the brightest students at the school. A 17-year-old peasant girl, she was ranked first in the college pre-entrance exam in Shandong, her home province.

She was expelled from Tsinghua University because she practiced Falun Gong and sentenced to 12 years in prison. In prison, she was injected with a mixture of narcotics and anti-psychotic drugs. She became mentally unstable and passed away in February 2015.
