(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Li Changhai, 68, lived in the residential area near a geothermal power plant in the Longtan District in Jilin Province. He was arrested for distributing Shen Yun DVDs that promote traditional Chinese culture.
In September 2012 the Chinese Communist Party Political and Legal Affairs Committee, the 610 Office, and the Jilin domestic security division tried Mr. Li in secret. They did not notify his family or his attorney. He was convicted and sent to the Gongzhuling Prison, Jilin Province, and tortured.
He has been in prison for nearly three years. Reliable sources report he was sent to a facility for mentally ill prisoners and subjected to the small bench torture for two weeks.
Mr. Li's arrest and imprisonment follows a pattern of abuse in how the CCP treats Falun Gong practitioners. He was arrested by officers from Longhua Police Station in the Longtan District on February 17, 2012, for distributing Shen Yun DVDs.
At the jail, policemen Zhao Rui and Li Leiyu slapped him so hard that his face swelled up. They removed his pants, leaving him only in his underwear. Zhao hurled insults at Mr. Li when he asked to use the restroom.
He was tortured until 8:00 pm by the police, who then took his house keys and drove him home. They entered Mr. Li's home without his permission and found his son and 14-year-old granddaughter. The police ordered the two not to move while they ransacked the home.
They threw everything around and confiscated Dafa books, personal belongings, and over 6,000 yuan that was never returned. They tore Dafa drawings and poetry off the walls.
The police took Mr. Li back, beat him, and then sent him to the Jilin Detention Center for 15 days.
On March 26, 2012, Mr. Li's family received an arrest notice from Longtan Police Branch. The space on the arrest notice that should have listed the arresting officers had no signatures, making the notice void.
His family hired an attorney, who met with Mr. Li. The attorney took copies of his files from the Longtan Procuratorate. He informed the family that the procuratorate rejected the case for lack of evidence and advised the family to demand Mr. Li's release.
Longtan police would not release Mr. Li and falsified more evidence, which they submitted to the Longtan Procuratorate and Longtan Court. The court arranged a secret trial on August 31, 2012.
In early September, Mr. Li's family member received a letter from Gongzhuling Prison in Jilin Province informing them that Mr. Li was a prisoner there.
Mr. Li's family went to the Longtan District Court and spoke with Zheng Zhuo, who told the family about the secret trial. They asked Zheng about this. “We hired an attorney. Why didn't you notify the attorney and family about the trial?”
“Falun Gong defendants may not have attorneys who come from outside. The court assigns a local attorney,” Zheng said.
When the family asked for the name of the attorney, she told the family his name was Ju, who worked at the legal research center in the Longtan Bureau of Justice.
Mr. Li Changhai is still in prison. When he did the Falun Gong exercises in 2013, the head of the prison placed him in an area reserved for mentally ill prisoners.
