Chinese Student in America Appeals for Help after Mother Detained in Brainwashing Center in China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Chen Meiyu, 61, was arrested and sent to a Zhanjiang “legal education” center, where authorities hold brainwashing sessions to pressure Falun Dafa practitioners to renounce their beliefs through coercion, violence, and torture. When her family requested her release, they were threatened.

Recently, local 610 Office personnel tried to pressure her family to sign documents promising to oppose Ms. Chen’s belief in Falun Dafa, a spiritual practice persecuted by the Chinese Communist regime.

Ms. Chen’s son, a Ph.D. student at the University of Washington, wrote an open letter to the public in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province, appealing for their help in securing his mother’s release.

After Ms. Chen's arrest on June 17, 2014, the Chengwai Police illegally searched the home of one of her daughters on June 19. Although they did not find anything, they arrested Ms. Chen’s son-in-law and beat him at the police station.

In his letter, Ms. Chen's son wrote:

“The police warned my brother-in-law to be careful or they would beat him to death and arrest my entire family.

“My sister’s family lives in fear every day. She needs medication to help her sleep. Officials from the local 610 Office keep having 'talks' with my sisters to pressure them to oppose my mother by signing a prepared statement.”

Ms. Chen started practicing Falun Dafa in 2004 and regained her health. Her son recalls, “I have no reason to oppose her [practicing Falun Dafa]. In the past ten years, we no longer needed to worry about her because she is healthy and no longer needed medications.”

Calling on the public in Zhanjiang to help secure his mother’s release, Ms. Chen's son wrote, “If more and more people know about the atrocities [the Chinese regime] is committing, the perpetrators would not dare to continue their rampant crimes.”
