(Minghui.org) One day while entertaining guests in my home, I stepped out to buy more bread for our lunch. Heading to the bakery on my bicycle, I saw a man lying in the middle of the road. There was a pool of blood near his head, and it looked as though he had been lying there for awhile. There was a motorcycle on its side nearby.
Vehicles and pedestrians alike passed the man, carefully avoiding him. No one was seeing to him. I even noticed people inside the nearby buildings peering out the windows at him, but no one came to help. There were people on both sides of the road, but everyone ignored him.
I was reminded of something that happened to me 25 years ago, before I began practicing Falun Dafa. To this day, it still haunts me. I was a newlywed back then. One day while walking home, I saw a man sitting on the side of the road, looking very distressed. His fallen bike lay nearby. I was concerned and thought maybe he needed help getting up.
I hesitated, because back then I was concerned about my reputation - it might not be proper for a woman to touch a strange man on the street. I decided if he really needed assistance, he would ask me. I was hoping another man would come by and give this man the help he needed. So I did nothing, I did not help that fellow human being who was clearly in need of assistance.
Recognizing My Selfishness
After I began to practice Falun Dafa, I knew this behavior was selfishness. Master told us the requirement for a Falun Dafa disciple in Teaching the Fa at the Fa Conference in Australia:
"With everything you should think of others—first think about others, and then think about yourself. I want you to cultivate to reach the kind of Consummation that is of a righteous Fa, with righteous enlightenment, and is one in which others come before yourself."
I am Master's disciple, and I must act in accordance with Master's requirement. I should have thought of this man first and done what I could do to help him. I hurried over and noticed his eyes were closed, and he showed no signs of consciousness. I checked to see if he was breathing and noticed a faint breath. I pinched his renzhong acupuncture point (below the nose and helps to restore consciousness) and tried to wake him up. He was still not responding.
Quietly I asked Master in my heart: “Master, please save him!" I began to repeat "Falun Dafa is good! Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good!" Soon, he took a breath, and moved slightly. “Thank you, Master!" I stood up, shouting to a small crowd who was watching from a distance, “He is still alive, I need help." Someone shouted, "Call 110!"
I grabbed my phone and quickly dialed 110. I was asked details about the accident. I told them what I knew, which wasn't much. They asked about the other vehicle that caused the accident. I told them no one was there, and not another single person was looking to help this person. They told me I must first dial 120, and that they would not come to the scene of the accident for a while yet.
I quickly dialed 120. Now there were others watching, and a small crowd gathered. My neighbor was among them. He recognized the injured person and called his family. He told me the victim's son-in-law was on his way. The 120 call on the other end asked if the family had been notified. I told them they had, and the victim's son-in-law should be arriving very soon.
My neighbor came up to me. He took the seat cover off the motorcycle and was going to attempt to stop the bleeding on the victim's head with it. I told him that was not a good idea, that the seat cushion was dirty and could cause an infection. The ambulance would arrive soon and take care of the bleeding. Now the crowd of people watching moved closer. I was pulled to the side by a relative whose shop was nearby. He asked me whether I knew the victim, to which I responded that I did not.
So he wondered why I had bothered to help someone that I did not even know and suggested that I leave. He said I should mind my own business and wasn't I worried about being blamed for the accident. I told him, "Did you forget? I am a Falun Dafa practitioner. I cannot stand by and do nothing when I see others in need. Do not worry about me."
I went back to the side of the injured person and waited for the ambulance.
The injured person was now conscious and started to jerk around. A former classmate of mine from junior high school works for a hospital, and I was wondering if she would be in the ambulance. The ambulance arrived, and, sure enough, one of the medical staff was my old friend. They tended to the man's wound and started an IV. They carried him to the ambulance and asked for a family member to attend. I told them the patient's family had not yet arrived, but I could go with them if necessary.
My friend then recognized me and asked if I knew the injured man. When I told her I did not know him, she looked puzzled. I again explained that I was a Falun Dafa practitioner, and how could I not help someone in so much in need of help. Just then the son-in-law arrived. Of course the first thing he wanted to know was what happened and who hit his father-in-law.
Not Being Attached to Being Recognized for Saving a Life
We quickly explained what we knew and told him to get in the ambulance. He then asked how bad the injury was. My neighbor told him how he had saved his father-in-law. The son-in-law was very grateful. While he was getting in the ambulance, he said he would repay his gratitude later. My neighbor accepted his gratitude as a savior without any hesitation.
The man I helped was now on his way to the hospital, and I thought I should leave. I still had guests waiting at home and still needed bread for our meal.
I went to my favorite bakery. The couple who own the shop are well informed about Falun Dafa and withdrew from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its affiliated organizations. Their shop is small but always busy, and business was good. When I went in, the shop was filled with people eating lunch and discussing the accident.
The owner asked me if I knew anything about what happened. I told him exactly what occurred. I was pleasantly surprised that the owner was genuinely moved by my story. He said that there were not many people like me anymore: Someone who rescues a total stranger, without getting any recognition for such a good deed. He said, "The bread's on me, no charge today."
I was also impressed by the owner's strong sense of justice and told him, "My Master told us that we need to be a good person no matter where we are. Every Falun Dafa practitioner would do the same. The propaganda on TV about Falun Dafa practitioners are lies." Then I insisted on paying him, and said, "You run a small business, and you work hard. I just did what I should do. I appreciate your kindness, but your generosity is too much."
Since I insisted, he gave me two yuan back and said “I will only charge you my cost. It's my way of saying thank you for your efforts." How could I refuse? I thanked him sincerely.
As I left the bakery, many of the customers nodded to me and smiled. I am proud that I am Master's disciple.
