Retired Director of Tax Bureau Holds Hunger Strike after Three Months of Illegal Detention

(Minghui.org) Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Xu Xiaohai, from Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, went on a hunger strike to protest his illegal detention on around March 28, 2014.

Mr. Xu had been arrested at home by police and officers from the 610 Office at midnight on January 8, 2014. The police ransacked his house and confiscated several computers and other personal belongings.

A few days after his arrest, Mr. Xu had high blood pressure and was taken to the Youhao Hospital, which is part of the Wenzhou Prison System.

He has been detained at the Wenzhou Detention Center for over three months. To protest his detention he went on a hunger strike on around March 28, 2014.

Mr. Xu, in his sixties, was formerly deputy director of the Tax Bureau of Lucheng District of Wenzhou City, and is now retired. He was an honest official who did not accept bribes.

Wife Imprisoned

Ms. Xu's wife, Ms. Jiang Chunyan, who is also a practitioner, was arrested on January 21, 2012, for giving Falun Gong informational materials to a young girl. The police searched her bag and found some Falun Gong materials.

The court, under direction of the 610 Office, sentenced her to three years and two months in prison. She is being held at the Zhejiang Province Women's Prison. Additional information about her is not available.
