Ms. Chen Guilan Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison for Handing Out DVDs

(Minghui.org) Ms. Chen Guilan, 61, was recently sentenced to seven years in prison by the Shuangta Court in Chaoyang City, Laoning Province, for distributing truth clarifying materials.

Ms. Chen was put on trial on August 9, 2013. The lawyer presented a well-reasoned defense, and pled not-guilty on her behalf. The people in the courtroom were dumbstruck when they heard her sentence. The lawyer asked the judge to play the truth clarification DVD that Ms. Chen was arrested for handing out, which was used as evidence to persecute Ms. Chen. However, the judge didn't dare to do it. Even though Ms. Chen had committed no crime, the judge still sentenced her to seven years in prison.

Background

Ms. Chen distributed the Falun Gong truth clarification DVDs near the central market at 9:00 a.m. on March 3, 2013. She was discovered by a patrol officer and arrested.

Ms. Chen was interrogated by an officer from the Qianjin Police Department. Zhang Zhiqiang, director of the Qianjin Police Department, detained her because she did not admit her guilt, and they did not like her attitude. Officer Wang Zhiren soon after passed her case to the Shuangta Procuratorate. The Qianjin Police Department, Shuangta Procuratorate, and Shuangta Court collaborated to have her tried on August 9, 2013, at the Chaoyang Intermediate Court. The prosecutor from Shuangta Procuratorate asked the court to sentence Ms. Chen to at least five to seven years in prison.

Ms. Chen's lawyer pleaded "not guilty" for her, and asked the judge to play the DVD in court to see if the contents constituted a crime. However, the judge didn't dare to play it. The lawyer asked for an acquittal and to have Ms. Chen immediately released. The judge totally ignored the law and the constitution, and sentenced Ms. Chen to seven years in prison, which they had agreed on in advanced.
