Mr. Liu Wei from Nanzheng County Wrongfully Criminalized and Put on Trial

(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Wei, a Falun Gong practitioner from Nanzheng County, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province, was put on trial on May 14, 2013, after nearly four months of illegal detention.

The Nanzheng County Court, where the trial was held, is in close proximity to the Nanzheng Detention Center, where Mr. Liu has been unlawfully detained.

When Mr. Liu was brought into the courtroom, his hands were handcuffed, his feet were shackled, and his head was covered. His daughter could hardly recognize him. When the cover was removed, she saw that his hair had turned gray and he had become very skinny.

Several police cars were parked outside the courthouse, and plainclothes police patrolled the road. Mr. Liu's daughter was admitted as a visitor, but not before her ID was checked and she was searched several times.

Details of the Case

Mr. Liu was arrested around 3 p.m. on January 26, 2013, while distributing informational materials about Falun Gong in Huangguan Town, Nanzheng County. He was taken to the Nanzheng County Detention Center.

Agents from the Hanzhong City 610 Office and Hantai District Domestic Security Division were involved in the arrest.

Mr. Liu's family was told that he would be held for 15 days. However, even 26 days later, authorities still refused to release him.

When his daughter came to the detention center on the morning of February 21, the guards refused to let her see Mr. Liu. One of the guards told her: “Liu Wei's case has been reclassified as a criminal case, and he will be put on trial. His case was changed from administrative detention to criminal detention on February 10. Therefore, he won't be released.”

Mr. Liu was put on trial on May 14, 2013. He refused the court-appointed lawyer, asking instead to represent himself. He also requested that his family be allowed to attend the hearing.

Earlier Incarceration

Mr. Liu, 53, is a former employee of the Hanzhong City Grain and Oil Machinery Factory.

On September 25, 2009, officers Ma Ping'an, Li Youzhi, and others from the Hantai District Domestic Security Division rushed into his office and arrested him because it was reported that he practiced Falun Gong. Police also ransacked his home.

Mr. Liu was taken to the Hantai District Detention Center and later sentenced to two years of forced labor. He was incarcerated in the Baojiguo Town Forced Labor Camp.
