Ms. Qiu Liying

Ms. Qiu Liying worked as an inspector for the Quality Inspection Section of the Shijiazhuang City Refinery. One of the daily inspection jobs was to test a sample that contained a high percentage of benzene. Because of the harmful effects this chemical has on one's health, her colleagues did not wish to do this job. Qiu volunteered to take the job and did it alone.

Ms. Qiu is very warm-hearted and helps others. Although she was not rich and her salary was not high, she once gave 2000 yuan to a lady near her home after hearing the lady was having financial difficulty.

Ms. Qiu told her friends and colleagues that she used to be stubborn and had a bad temper, but changed and became more understanding and peaceful after she began practicing Falun Dafa. She also recovered from a chronic disease and the abdominal pain she had after giving birth to her child.

However, after July 1999, when the CCP started the brutal persecution of Falun Gong, Qiu encountered unimaginable suffering.

1. Unimaginable Sufferings

In October 1999, Ms. Qiu was subjected to forced labor. For over four and a half years, she was detained in several places -- Shijiazhuang City Forced Labor Camp, Tangshan City Forced Labor Camp, Tangshan Ankang Drug Rehabilitation Center, Tangshan City No. 5 Mental Hospital, Baoding City Forced Labor Camp, Gaoyang City Forced Labor Camp, Hebei Province Law Education Center (an infamous brainwashing center). The suffering she endured is shocking to hear. Here she describes here some of her experiences.

Assaulted at Kaiping Forced Labor Camp in Tangshan City

On December 9, 1999, the guard instigated prisoner Wang Yanqiu to beat me in order to 'transform' me. I lost consciousness due to the beating. Wang Yanqiu specifically targeted my breasts and genitals.

One day in October 2000, guard Wang Wenping instigated prisoner Pi Shixia to beat me. She gave a vicious kick to my throat and another kick to my chest, which caused me fall to the ground. I was stunned and immediately unable to move. Two more prisoners were called in and they dragged me to a hidden room. They beat and kicked me. They whipped me with a canvas strip. As a result of the beating, my eyes were bruised and swollen. The unbearable chest pain lasted for more than a month.

Torture Re-enactment: Hanging by handcuffs

Guard Wang Wenping instigated prisoner Li Junqing to beat me in November 2000. She took off my pants and beat my bottom with a leather belt. I was then hung up from a metal bed with only the tips of my toes touching the ground. She kicked me and spat on me. Afterwards I had difficulty breathing and felt suffocated. My entire body was covered in purple bruises.

One day in mid-January 2000, a guard took me to the courtyard at around 4:00 a.m. I was wearing only thin clothes and was hung there from a tree. The temperature outside was around -20°C (-4°F). I was frozen and had a runny nose. I hung there so long that my nasal mucus formed a meter-long icicle. The flesh on both of my hands cracked open due to the cold, and blood ran out of these openings.

One day in mid-June 2000, I was taken outside and placed in the hot sun. At that time, I had been on a hunger strike and was very weak. The temperature was 38°C (100°F). I was forced to stand outside in the hot sun until 3:00 p.m. Just as I was about to collapse, I was taken inside.

Injected With Nerve-Damaging Drugs in Tangshan City No. 5 Mental Hospital

On June 30, 2000, I was sent to the No. 5 Mental Hospital from the Tangshan Forced Labor Camp. The order came directly from the Hebei Province Police Department. In the hospital, I was forcibly given drugs which affect the central nervous system. As a result I had a severe headache. In the hospital, my blood pressure was low, 40 over 20. To take a five milliliter blood sample, the nurse had to insert three needles in both of my arms. I was given an electric treatment on my brain. The high electrical current went into my brain through needles inserted into my head. I was driven to the edge of a mental breakdown.

In attempts to force me to give up my practice, the medical workers were instructed to 'treat' a healthy person like me. They kept subjecting me to the 'electric needle treatment' and gave me drugs which affected the central nervous system. My health was severely damaged. I was in a half-sleepy state both day and night. My legs were weak and I was unable to even stand up. My tongue became stiff and I was unable to form words clearly. I was dizzy and my eyes were swollen. I felt as though I was always in a trance. I suffered a hellish 90 days in that mental hospital.

Persecuted in Baoding City Forced Labor Camp

Torture Re-enactment: Beating the face with a shoe sole

On May 27, 2001, a guard at Baoding Forced Labor Camp instigated prisoner Yang Xiuxia to beat my head with her shoe. My head immediately became numb, and at 6:00 p.m., my body started to spasm. Prison doctor Du Baochuan was called in. He inserted a needle into my philtrum while threatening and insulting me. The blood from the philtrum kept running down and I was convulsed with pain. He haphazardly tried to insert needles. Two inmates beat and held me down on a metal bed. I lost consciousness. After I regained consciousness, inmate Liu Jianju beat me with a two-meter long bamboo pole. My heart stopped beating and I lost consciousness again. This abuse went on for about two hours.

I was forced to do slave labor for 18 hours a day in September 2001. I was never allowed to sleep before midnight. In 2002, we started to produce lead sheets for batteries. We started working around 7:00 a.m. and finished at 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. During these hours, we were not allowed to drink or eat, and had to stand, working non-stop. The lead powder was everywhere in the workshop. In my weakened physical condition due to the torture and abuse, and with poisonous lead powder everywhere, I fainted in the workshop.

2. No peaceful or normal life after surviving detention

Ms. Qiu Liying miraculously survived the torment and abuse she was subjected to in the forced labor camps. After she was forced to give up her job in the refinery, she had to take several different jobs. Because of her outstanding ability, responsibility, and honesty, wherever she worked, she had a good reputation. Her manager once increased her salary three times within a short period of time, which had never been done before in that company. Later, after she came back from another one-year forced labor term, the owner of the company came to visit her and offered her the job back.

Ms. Qiu had been taking care of her paralyzed father after she was released from the labor camp. Every day she fed her father, siphoned out his sputum and cleaned his excrement and urine. Everyone who knew how carefully she looked after her Dad praised her filial obedience.

Ms. Qiu was subjected to forced labor again in 2008. Her mother was so worried about her that her health was affected. She became paralyzed in 2010. After Ms. Qiu Liying was released from the forced labor camp, she did her best to help her two older sisters and younger sister to take care of their mother. She sometimes stayed up all night taking care of her mother, but she didn't complain.

On February 25, 2012 Ms. Qiu spent the entire night taking care of her mother and then went to work at around 8:00 a.m. When her family was not able to reach her, her sister went to look for her. She found her bicycle still at the same place near her home, but her apartment had obviously been ransacked. The desktop PC was gone and all the closets were wide open. Things were strewn all over the floor. Some neighbors had witnessed Ms. Qiu being taken away by officers from the Changan District Police Department. She is still not allowed visits from her family or her lawyer. She is currently detained in Shijiazhuang City No. 2 Detention Center.
