(Clearwisdom.net) Ms. Liu Xiaolian was an upright, kindhearted lady from a rural area. She was illegally arrested four times because she refused to give up practicing Falun Gong. In years after July 20, 1999, when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched the persecution of Falun Gong, she spent over five years and four months in detention. She suffered brutal persecution and endured many kinds of severe torture, such as being pulled in five directions, beaten with heavy shackles, injected with unknown drugs, forced-fed with unknown drugs and shocked with high-voltage electric batons. Ms. Liu passed away on October 26, 2008, at the age of 68.

Ms. Liu lived in Babaodao Village, Chibi Town, Chibi City, Hubei Province. She had many illnesses, and in 1958, during the time of the Great Leap Forward, her right eye was blinded. In 1995, Ms. Liu began to practice Falun Gong, and two weeks later her illnesses were gone. She became healthy and her right eye even regained sight. She also became a happier person. Since she personally experienced the benefits from practicing Falun Gong, she subsequently told other people about the beauty of the practice.

First Detention: Injected with Unknown Drugs

In December 2000, Ms. Liu went to Beijing to appeal for justice for Falun Gong. She went to Tiananmen Square, but was arrested and beaten. Three days later, she was sent to Haicheng City, Liaoning Province, where she was exposed to extremely cold weather and not given enough food. On January 17, 2001, officers from the Chibi Police Department took her to the Chibi City Second Detention Center, where she was detained. The police hired a temporary officer, Ye Jun, to torture Ms. Liu. Ye beat her in the head, eyes, chest and belly every morning. When it was close to the Chinese New Year, she was transferred to the Chibi City First Detention Center.

On February 7, 2001, Cai Jinping, section chief of the Chibi Police Department, interrogated Ms. Liu. Ye Jun brutally beat her until he got tired during the interrogation. She was unable to stand or crawl after the beating. Cai came up to her and said that he would strip her clothes off and then attempted to do it. Ms. Liu shouted at him, “What are you doing?” Cai said: “I can do whatever I want. I am a cadre, and you don't listen to the Party. You should do whatever the Party asks you to do.” She said: “I am over 60 years old and about the same age as your mother. You are a cadre and a Party member. But instead of serving and helping people, you ordered others to beat me and violated my human rights. You even tried to forcibly strip off my clothes. It is the same as humiliating your own mother.” Cai became angry and started to strip off Ms. Liu's clothes. At that moment, someone walked into the room, so he had to stop.

While being detained in the Chibi First Detention Center, Ms. Liu studied Falun Gong teachings, did the exercises and clarified the facts to people. Because of this, the guards tortured her in different ways and tried to force her to renounce her belief. On June 28, 2002, it was raining. Qian Yulan, the deputy director of the detention center, came to her room and said: “You are nearly paralyzed from doing Falun Gong practice. The higher officials would like to inject you with some tonic to heal you.” Ms. Liu said: “Being paralyzed is not because of Falun Gong practice, but because of the brutal persecution I have endured here. I don't need to have injections.” Then two inmates walked into the room and put shackles on her, and she was pushed into a car. Deng Dingsheng, another deputy director of the detention center, drove the car. Cai, Qian, guard Song Yuzhen, and two inmates were also in the car. They came to the Women and Children Clinic first, but the doctors there refused to cooperate with them. Then they drove to the Chibi City First Hospital. The doctors there did not examine Ms. Liu, but prepared the drugs for injection. The detention officials handcuffed her hands and feet to the four corners of the bed. Then she was blindfolded and injected with drugs.

That same night, Ms. Liu bled from her mouth, nose, ears, and eyes. Her ears were in extreme pain. She also vomited and had diarrhea, urinated blood and had blood clots in her bowel movements. Five days later, her bowel movements were dark, bloody and smelled foul. She experienced pain similar to when giving birth when she urinated or had a bowel movement. She was unable to eat and could only drink a bit of water. Realizing that she was on the verge of death, the detention center officials released her after extorting 3,000 yuan from her family.

Second Detention: Body Pulled in Five Directions

Ms. Liu's condition was really bad and her family thought that she would not live much longer. They began to prepare for her funeral. But miraculously she survived. Although she was still weak, when she was strong enough she went out to tell people about the persecution she had suffered.

However, on the second day of her going out, the local police came to her home and took her from her bed. On October 17, 2002, she was transferred to the Chibi City First Detention Center. On December 6, 2002, deputy director Deng Dingsheng and over a dozen guards, plus four inmates, totaling 18 people, tortured Ms. Liu. Four inmates grabbed each of her limbs and pulled hard on them. Deng grabbed her head and pulled hard on it as well. When the five of them pulled hard at the same time, Ms. Liu's bottom was torn open. Her bones made unusual noises and dislocated. Later, other guards joined in the torture of Ms. Liu. One after another they beat her body with heavy shackles. Many of her bones were broken in the process, and Ms. Liu lost consciousness. After she regained consciousness, they pushed her neck harshly against her shoulder, and she passed out again. After she regained consciousness, she was locked in shackles for over a week. She was not given any water for two weeks.

Torture Re-enactment: Severe beating

On April 29, 2003, to force Ms. Liu to renounce Falun Gong, Deng Dingsheng and several guards beat her again. Her head was bleeding and bones in her arms, legs, hands, chest and lumbar region were broken. The guards assumed she would die, so they threw her by a pond in the garden. When they saw that Ms. Liu did not die, they kicked and stomped on her. The joints in her arms and legs were broken, with some of her bones exposed. Somehow, she remained alive.

On February 4, 2004, the United Nations' special rapporteur on torture, Theo Van Boven, sent out an emergency appeal to save Ms. Liu. Although the guards dared not torture her as severely as before, the torture never stopped. On February 29, 2004, Qian Yulan, deputy director of the detention center, used a heavy boot to strike her in the head. Blood gushed from her eyes, ears, mouth and nose.

Because Ms. Liu was no longer able to take care of herself, the officials at the detention center notified her family on May 29, 2004, to come and take her home.

Ms. Lui Died after Being Severely Tortured in the Mental Hospital

On April 26, 2006, the police arrested Ms. Liu again and detained her at the Chibi Pufang Mental Hospital. Because she was so severely persecuted, she became mute. The following was transcribed from her handwritten note:

“My name is Liu Xiaolian. I am 67 years old [in 2006]. On April 26, 2006, I was abducted and thrown into the evil's den. For over three months, depraved men tried to kill me and to force me to cooperate with them. I refused to give in to their terror and told them, 'The righteous shall never compromise or give in to the wicked.' A physician known as Director Zhang made an agreement with the Chibi Town government and the police that I would be subjected to medical abuse for the price of 6,000 yuan.

Under the directions of Director Zhang and his accomplices, I was subjected high-voltage electric shocks and shocked with electric needles for four hours. He also ordered young male psychiatric patients to insult, curse, beat and sexually harass me. I was force-fed with drugs that are harmful to my body. He also gave me 11 pounds of poisonous intravenous infusions over a 24-hour period. Afterward, the skin all over my body turned dark, and I lost consciousness for 48 hours. When I came to, I had lost the ability to speak. The doctor only stopped the medical abuse when he saw that I had become mute.

After I became mute, I wrote many letters to Director Zhang and his accomplices. I tried to bring out their kindness and told them they had accrued a lot of karma by persecuting Falun Gong practitioners for monetary incentives. They claimed they were not afraid of karma, but I could tell they were very frightened deep down inside.”

On September 1, 2006, Ms. Liu was once again sent to the Chibi Pufang Mental Hospital and was persecuted. She suffered forced-feeding, injection of unknown drugs, shock with electric needles, and suffocation under quilts for several hours. She was on the verge of death. The people responsible for the persecution included Dr. Han Hai, Dr. Shen Zubo and Director Zhang Hongjing.

During the next two years of detention, Ms. Liu continued to suffer physical and mental torture. By September 2008, her whole body was swollen, and she had difficulty eating and was unable to urinate. The doctor said she could only live for about twenty days and she was sent home.

Ms. Liu Xiaolian: Whole body swollen and on the verge of death

After more than five years and four months of heinous persecution, Ms. Liu passed away on October 26, 2008. That same night, six plainclothes police officers monitored her home to try and catch any Falun Gong practitioners that might visit her.

Right after Ms. Liu's death, officials from the Chibi City 610 Office called the Chibi Town officials to congratulate them. Being afraid that Ms. Liu's family would seek justice, they paid her family 7,000 yuan for medical and funeral expenses.
