(Minghui.org) A few days ago when I was studying the Fa, I read, “If you come to learn the practice and this Dafa with various pursuits, you will not learn anything.” (Zhuan Falun) I suddenly realized the deeper meaning of this sentence. Today, when I read the section, “The Issue of Pursuit” in Lecture Two of Zhuan Falun, Teacher's words, “You are clinging to the attachment of pursuit. Do you come here just for this?” (Zhuan Falun) again shook me.
Why don't we obtain the Fa even though we study the Fa? It's because we are reading with pursuit. We are pursuing better health, having our third eye opened, supernatural abilities, Consummation, etc. When we have these pursuits, we cannot elevate or obtain a higher level of Fa. We can only be a good person, following the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance and eliminating karma by suffering hardships.
When we are doing the three things, we tend to have intention and pursue certain outcomes. When we study the Fa, we are pursuing obtaining the Fa, elevating, and improving; when we send forth righteous thoughts, we are pursuing eliminating the evil. When we are involved in a project, we are pursuing mighty virtue. When we cannot see the desired results, we may slack off. When we do something with a strong pursuit for desired results, we are doing it with a human mindset. Master said,
“In other words, as gods see it, that’s just fooling around—not mighty virtue, or cultivation—even though you did do it.” (“Dafa Disciples Must Study the Fa - Fa Teaching Given at the 2011 Washington DC Metro Area Fa Conference”)
Last year, a practitioner from my hometown was arrested and put on trial. We hired a lawyer from Beijing to defend him. During both trials, many local practitioners went to nearby places to send forth righteous thoughts for the case. The defense lawyer did a good job. However, the practitioner was still sentenced to three years and imprisoned. I felt that the practitioner did not have a good understanding of the Fa principles and did not step out of the arrangement of the old forces. Today I realized that the several meetings we had regarding the trials were very much result-oriented. The more we pursued, the less likely that we would get the desired results. Teacher wanted us to focus on the process: during the process, how many human mentalities we have eliminated, how many higher level principles we have enlightened to, and how much we have elevated. If we did well during the process, we would have the desired results.
Pursuing results is a human mentality. Teacher taught us, “Doing, but without pursuit—So constant, abiding in the Dao.” (“Abiding in the Dao” from Hong Yin) Pursuing results is not just an ordinary human mentality; this also involves whether we can step out of the principles of the old universe and the old forces' arrangement, where consummation of self is the ultimate goal of cultivation. No matter what we pursue, the root cause is selfish, which is preventing us from elevating. Let us all let go of the heart to pursue. Only then can we “attain the righteous Enlightenment of selflessness and altruism.” (“Non-Omission in Buddha-Nature” from Essentials for Further Advancement)
