Mr. Zhou is now extremely weak. He has symptoms of dizziness, low blood pressure, and general malaise. After Mr. Zhou was arrested, his family went to the Ningxiang County Detention Center multiple times demanding he be released, but all their requests have been rejected.

When Mr. Zhou was telling people the facts about Falun Gong in Fenghuang Village, Xieduopu, Ningxiang County, in the afternoon on August 20, he was reported by Zhong Jianliang, the village head, and was arrested and taken to Ningxiang County Detention Center. Mr. Zhou went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. When his case went to trial on October 12, he had been on a hunger strike for over 50 days. His weight went from 70kg to 30kg, and he was extremely weak. Notifications of his critical condition were issued several times by the detention center. On the day of the trial, several people had to assist the extremely thin Mr. Zhou into the courtrom. Faced with strong appeals by local residents, friends, and family to release him, the proceedings had to be adjourned.

Mr. Zhou, age 51, used to be a factory manager at Renminnanlu Feed Factory in Ningxiang County. After he began practicing Falun Gong in 1996, he began following the principles of Truthfulness-Benevolence-Forbearance and did a number of good deeds for the local residents, including donating money to those in need.

Since Jiang Zemin's regime and the Chinese Communist Party launched the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999, Mr. Zhou has been detained eight times, sent to forced labor camps twice, sentenced once, and has been beaten and tortured. His family has not been able to live in peace. His mother, Zhao Xiuzhen, was in her 70s when passed away in July 2007. At the time of his mother's death, Mr. Zhou was incarcerated at Wangling Prison in Hunan Province, and he was not able to see his mother one last time before she died.

Mr. Zhou was released in September 2010. Less than a year later, on August 20, 2011, he was arrested again. As of this article, he is still being held in Ningxiang County Detention Center.

On the day of the trial, October 12, 2011, agents on duty from Ningxiang County 610 Office, the police department, and other offices came to block the entrances to the courthouse. Mr. Zhou's father and wife were not allowed into the courthouse.

Mr. Zhou's father is in his 80s. He went to the detention center several times to visit his son but was not successful, and he is very worried about his son's safety. Other than taking care of her elderly father-in-law, Mr. Zhou's wife has been running between the 610 Office and the police department, demanding that her husband be released. Once, when she went to the Ningxiang County 610 Office, a young staff person yelled at her for no reason. She was so exhausted she nearly passed out.
