(Clearwisdom.net) On January 16, 2011, Ms. Wang Guixiang from the Jiaozhou area of Qingdao, Shandong Province, was illegally arrested by the Yanghe Town Police Station officers for distributing Shen Yun Performing Arts DVDs at the Yanghe local market in Jiaozhou. She was subsequently held at the Jiaozhou Detention Center and later transferred to the Qingdao Dashan Third Detention Center, where she has been held since.

On June 3, 2011, the Jiaozhou Procuratorate and Court in Qingdao conducted a secret trial to sentence Ms. Wang. The court didn't notify Ms. Wang's lawyer of the trial date, and detention center staff prohibited the lawyer from visiting her prior to the trial.

Ms. Wang's family hired a lawyer to defend her some time after her arrest. On May 4, 2011, her lawyer's request to see Ms. Wang was rejected by detention center officials. Officials referred him to the 610 Office and required him to obtain a permit from the Justice Bureau.

The Jiaozhou Court had initially set Ms. Wang's trial date for May 25, 2011. However, court officials subsequently informed her lawyer that the trial was postponed and a new date was not yet scheduled. Ms. Wang's lawyer made repeated requests to the court for notification of the new trial date.

However, as of June 3, 2011, the day of the secret trial, her lawyer hadn't received any verbal or written notification. On the trial day, the surrounding court area was heavily guarded by police, and the pedestrian walk was closed. All passersby were required to display identification cards and have their bags searched. Even the apartment complexes and hotels near the court were patrolled by police. Residents were required to display identification cards to enter their apartment complexes.

Prior to the trial, Yanghe Police Station officers were under orders from the Jiaozhou 610 Office to harass Ms. Wang's family. They arrested her husband in Yanghe and demanded that he not hire a lawyer. They also threatened to subject Ms. Wang to a harsher sentence if he insisted on hiring a lawyer to defend her.

Since the Chinese Communist Party began to persecute Falun Gong practitioners in 1999, Ms. Wang has been illegally detained six times. In April 2002, she was sentenced to five years in the Shandong Province Women's Prison. In the prison, she was subjected to brainwashing, forced to squat for extended periods, denied restroom use, deprived of sleep, and forced to perform extended and intense labor. Her mouth was stuffed with a towel and taped while she was locked in solitary confinement, and guards shocked her with electric batons.

On March 2, 2008, Ms. Wang and another practitioner from the same town went to the police station to request the return of the money that had been extorted from them. However, they were arrested for carrying brochures that clarified the facts about Falun Gong. That afternoon, they were taken to the Jiaozhou Detention Center.
