(Clearwisdom.net) Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Zhang Xuefeng and his wife, Ms. Liu Kaimei, from Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, were arrested on May 26, 2011. Mr. Zhang was taken to the Xiaguan District Detention Center, and Ms. Liu to the Nanjing City Detention Center. Around July, Mr. Zhang was illegally sentenced to a year and a half of forced labor, and Ms. Liu to one year.
Their relatives hired two lawyers for the couple. However, the Nanjing City 610 Office collaborated with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice and pressured the lawyers. As a result, Mr. Zhang’s lawyer quit out of fear for his own personal safety. Ms. Zhang’s lawyer was also put under tremendous pressure.
Mr. Zhang was then transferred to the Fangqiang Forced Labor Camp in Dafeng, Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, on August 3, 2011. Ms. Liu wa transferred to the Jvdong Women’s Forced Labor Camp in Jiangsu Province. Their relatives have proceeded with an administrative appeal.
After the couple were arrested, their parents, who are already in their 70s, and their minor child were left without care. Their father has poor memory and their mother suffers from illnesses.
Ms. Liu has started a hunger strike. When her relatives visited her, they discovered that she was in very poor health.
During the past few years the couple had been repeatedly arrested and persecuted by the communist regime. In 2001 Mr. Zhang was sentenced to eight and a half years in the Suzhou City Prison and Ms. Liu to seven years in the Nantong City Women’s Prison. The both were also fired from their workplace.
