The article told a story about Ms. Li Jinan, who had supported an impoverished student for years. When the article was published, Ms. Li was in jail. She had been sentenced to three and a half years of imprisonment because she practiced Falun Gong. In May 2006, Ms. Li was released from prison, but she was closely monitored. Her mother was frightened by the police and had a heart attack after she visited Ms. Li.

Ms. Li Jinan Persecuted

Ms. Li Jinan is a Falun Gong practitioner from Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province. She was arrested in November 2002 and sentenced to three and a half years in prison. After being released in May 2006, she was closely monitored by the officers from the local 610 Office, and by officers from the Domestic Security Division. She was subsequently forced to become homeless to escape further persecution. She returned home in May of 2009, and the local police installed cameras on the building opposite Ms. Li's home, to monitor from window to window. Although the north side of the building has a bathroom and a kitchen, the police still monitored Ms. Li through the windows all year long.

The police also installed a camera at the entrance to Ms. Li's home, and installed a bright light so they could see clearly who went in and out at night. In addition, the police encouraged the neighbors and the safeguards to monitor Ms. Li on sensitive dates. People were sent to Ms. Li's home to monitor her around the clock. Whenever she went out, she was closely followed. One rainy day, Lu Xueming, deputy director of the Xihe Community, led two other women to closely follow Ms. Li to the supermarket.

On April 18, 2010, Ms. Li's mother, who is in her eighties, came to Kunshan to visit her. She was unexpectedly frightened as soon as she got off the train because a group of people had followed Ms. Li to the railway station. They were from the local 610 Office and the Domestic Security Division. Ms. Li's mother couldn't sleep for the entire night and suffered a heart attack the next day.

During her mother's visit, no matter where they went and regardless of whether they were going shopping or taking a walk, the spies always walked closely behind them. On April 24, Ms. Li and her mother went to Jinxi, an old city, and a large group of people followed them to the city to monitor them. Even when they took showers in a public bathroom, people sent by the police followed them to the bathroom, which put great pressure on the aged mother.

On April 25, the mother wanted to visit her relatives in Shanghai. As soon as Ms. Li accompanied her mother to the railway station, the people following them called to notify the police of their whereabouts. Therefore, another group of people from the 610 Office and officers from the Domestic Security Division went to the railway station and claimed that they wouldn't allow Ms. Li to leave Kunshan, or she would be arrested instantly. The over 80 year-old mother left Kunshan to visit her relatives on her own by train, with her eyes full of tears.

Ms. Li used to work at the government offices of Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province. She began funding Honggang, an impoverished child, to attend school in the Linshu County, Yimeng Mountain Area, in Shandong Province in 1993. Honggang was a pupil in second grade at an elementary school at the time. Ms. Li not only funded Honggang financially, but also encouraged him by writing him letters frequently. Every time she wrote to Honggang, she mailed with the letter a return envelope and a stamp. Ms. Li helped Honggang for over ten years.

In November 2002, Ms. Li was arrested and sentenced, and their connection was cut. The second year, Honggang was accepted for his outstanding academic performance by the Tianjin Engineering Normal University as a freshman. The first impulse Honggang had after he received the admission notice was to write to Ms. Li to share the good news with her. His letter was returned however, marked "person not found," by the post office. After Honggang started his studies at the university, he missed Ms. Li even more. Honggang intended to find Ms. Li with the help of this article. In fact, at that time, Ms. Li was being persecuted in jail.

In November 2009, Ms. Li was released from jail, but she was besieged at home for more than ten days by officers from the Kunshan Domestic Security Division. She was later forced to leave home to avoid further persecution. Officers from the Kunshan 610 Office and police from the Kunshan Domestic Security Division constantly harassed her mother and her other relatives in Shanghai. In May 2010, the homeless Ms. Li returned home. She was dismissed from her job and now receives only 300 yuan in allowances for her cost of living. Even this limited money was often frozen by the Kunshan 610 Office and Kunshan Domestic Security Division.
