(Clearwisdom.net) In March 2009, Ms. Fan Qifan, a retired professor from Hainan Normal University, was unlawfully arrested and placed in police custody for 2 weeks for discussing facts about Falun Gong to others. She was then incarcerated and tortured for nine months in a brainwashing center in the Jinken Hotel near Jinniuling, Haikou City.

Because Ms. Fan Qifan refused to renounce Falun Gong, she was subjected to torture at the brainwashing center. Under the order of Chairman Liu of the 610 Office in Hainan Province, Chen Haihua and Liang Yuling (both female) handcuffed Ms. Fan and hung her up in the air with just her toes touching the floor and Falun Gong books under her feet. This was both a physical and psychological torture. Despite the torture, Ms. Fan repeatedly shouted out "Falun Gong is good" to show her unyielding faith in Falun Gong. The torturers then decided to keep her hanging for 10 consecutive days in an attempt to make her renounce Falun Gong. As a result of the continuous torture, Ms. Fan eventually lost her mental clarity.

Back in early 2000, Ms. Fan was unlawfully arrested and sentenced to three years in Hainan Province Women's Forced Labor Camp. During the incarceration, Ms. Fan persevered in practicing Falun Gong and refused to renounce Falun Gong. For the past few years, Ms. Fan has been sharing with people important facts about Falun Gong at Wanlu Park in Haikou City and she has been repeatedly arrested and detained by the police. She has steadfast faith and has always refused to renounce Falun Gong in any verbal or written form. Each time the police released her from detention only when she was close to death.

This is but one of many cases of persecution against Falun Gong practitioners in Hainan Province. Torturers at the brainwashing center have resorted to many forms of torture in their attempts to make practitioners renounce their faith. They use personal insults, threats, cursing, beatings, hanging by handcuffs, sleep deprivation, withholding food, and forcing practitioners to step on the picture of the founder of Falun Gong. Between March and December of 2009, many practitioners were incarcerated in the brainwashing center held in the Jinken Hotel where they faced both physical and psychological tortures.
