Today's News from China includes incidents of persecution that took place in 33 cities or counties in 12 provinces. In this report, 14 practitioners were subjected to mistreatment during their detention, and at least 68 practitioners were illegally arrested.

1. [Songyuan City, Jilin Province] Police Arrest Practitioners under the Pretext of "Security for the Olympic Games"

The Olympic torch relay was scheduled to arrive in Songyuan City on July 14, 2008. Personnel from the Qianguo County Police Department and from the Jilatu Township Police Station arrested Falun Gong practitioners Mr. Li Guodong, Mr. Li Dongxu, Ms. Bai Yunfeng, Mr. Li Dongxu's mother, and Mr. Jiang Dongxu.

Songyuan City police authorities have arrested more than ten practitioners under the pretext of keeping the Olympic Torch Relay "safe."

2. [Jinan City, Shandong Province] Fifty-year-old Ms. Cui Temporarily, Living in Her Daughter's Home, was Arrested on July 9, 2008

3. [Dingxing County, Hebei Province] Two Practitioners Arrested

Ms. Yang Jinxian and Mr. Tian Ruilong's wife from Zheng Village, Dingxing County who were arrested on June 26, 2008 were sentenced to two and one year of forced labor, respectively. Ms. Yang's husband had lived away from home for two years. Her 80-year-old father still needs her care.

4. [Zhengzhou City, Henan Province] Six Practitioners Arrested

Mr. Xu Xieqia, Ms. Yang Xianfang, Ms. Bai Jialing, Ms. Wang Ling, Ms. Wang Shuxian, Ms. Liu Guirong and a non-practitioner from the No. 27 District in Zhengzhou City were arrested at 4:00 p.m. on July 9, 2008.

5. [Xiangtan City, Hunan Province] Ms. Hu Qing Arrested at Her Home Ten Days Ago

6. [Tianjin] Ms. Zheng Ailin Arrested

A group of police officers broke into Ms. Zheng Ailin's home in Caili Garden, the Hedong District at 3:00 p.m. on May 20, 2008. They ransacked her home and confiscated a computer and a printer. Police beat and arrested Ms. Zheng and her non-practitioner husband. Her husband was released after a one-month detention. Ms. Zheng is still being held in the district detention center in Tianjin.

8. [Tumen City, Jilin Province] Ms. Zhang Shuxian Went Missing on July 5, 2008

9. [Tangshan City, Hebei Province] Ms. Zhao Yabin Arrested

Ms. Zhao Yabin was arrested and her home ransacked at 4:00 p.m. on July 8, 2008. She was transferred to the Tangshan City No. 1 Detention Center on July 10, 2008.

11. [Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province] Suspected Arrest of Mr. Wang Zhigang on July 10, 2008

12. [Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province] Two Practitioners Arrested

Personnel from the Domestic Security Division arrested Ms. Feng Liqiong and Ms. Li Mu at 7:00 a.m. on July 8, 2008. The police ransacked their homes and confiscated some Dafa materials. Ms. Li Mu was released at 6:00 p.m., while Ms. Feng is still being held in the Baisha Detention Center in Yangjiang City.

Ms. Zhang Huanzhu, an employee from the Longwan Primary School, was put into the Sanshui Brainwashing Center on the morning of June 30, 2008.

13. [Zhengzhou City, Henan Province] Mr. Zhu Yunlong Arrested

Mr. Zhu Yunlong and Mr. Li were arrested from Mr. Zhu's home on July 9, 2008. Mr. Zhu is being held in the Zhongyuan District Detention Center in Zhengzhou City. Mr. Li's whereabouts are unknown.

14. [Weifang City, Shandong Province] Mr. Zhao Yancheng Arrested

Personnel from the Qiaoguan Town Police Station arrested 70-year-old Mr. Zhao Yancheng from his home on July 9, 2008. He was sent to a forced labor camp, but his poor health disqualified him from admission. Mr. Zhao is being held in the town's police station as a hostage for extortion of money from his family.

15. [Duolun County, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region] Several Practitioners Arrested

Ms. Yang Shumin, Ms. Zhou Yanhua, Ms. Xiao Guanglan and Ms. Yan Xiurong were arrested and sentenced to two years of forced labor on July 11, 2008. They were put in the Huhehaote City Women's Forced Labor Camp. The four practitioners have been on a protest hunger strike since their arrest. At this point, Ms. Yang cannot walk by herself.

Police arrested Mr. Zhou Ruilin and sentenced him to two years of forced labor. Police recently put him in the Ximeng Forced Labor Camp.

Ms. Xu Xiuying was extorted out of 10,000 yuan on July 6, 2008 and has been released.

16. [Tangshan City, Hebei Province] Ms. Li Chunhua Arrested at Her Home on the Morning of July 10, 2008, Released that Same Day

17. [Luhe County, Guangdong Province] Ms. Peng Wenxiu Arrested

Ms. Peng Wenxiu from Luhe County was arrested on the afternoon of June 4, 2008 and put in the Sanshui Forced Labor Camp that day. Her son's visit was denied.

19. [Haiyang City, Shandong Province] Personnel from the 610 Office Arrested Mr. Jiang Wentian

Personnel from the Haiyang City 610 Office broke into 70-year-old Mr. Jiang Wentian's home in Xiashizikuang Village, Guocheng Town at 5:00 a.m. on July 6, 2008. They arrested him and ransacked his home. Mr. Jiang had been held in the city brainwashing center several times.

21. [Jingmen City, Hubei Province] Mr. Li Daqin Sentenced to One Year of Forced Labor

Thirty-year-old Mr. Li Daqin was arrested in Xiangfan City, Hubei Province on May 20, 2008. He was sentenced to one year of forced labor and is being held in the Shayang Forced Labor Camp in Hubei Province.

22. [Chengdu City, Sichuan Province] Ms. Ai Chaoyu and Ms. Shen Shufang are Being Held in the Xinjin Brainwashing Center

23. [Xingtai City, Hebei Province] Mr. Zhiguo and Mr. Guicang Arrested

Police from Longyao County, Xingtai City broke into Mr. Zhiguo's home and confiscated two computers on July 2, 2008. They also put Mr. Zhiguo's wife into a detention center. Police ransacked his home on July 4, 2008.

Policeman Huang Liguo from Ren County, Xingtai City broke into Mr. Guicang's home and put him in the county detention center on the night of July 8, 2008.

24. [Changyi County, Shandong Province] Mr. Qu Hongliang and Another Practitioner Harassed

Personnel from the Beimeng Police Station in Changyi City broke into Mr. Qu Hongliang's home in Quqi Village and harassed him at 9:00 a.m. on July 29, 2008.

The police went to another practitioner's home the next day, but the practitioner escaped through a window. Police confiscated a set of lecture CDs, several Falun Gong truth-clarifying CDs, two containers of white paper and a VCD.

25. [Xinglong County, Hebei Province] Ms. Wu Cuilan Arrested

Personnel from the Anziling Township Police Station in Xinglong County and from the county Domestic Security Division arrested Ms. Wu Cuilan and ransacked her home at noon on July 10, 2008. They also arrested another 57-year-old woman.

26. [Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province] Mr. Jiang Peng Arrested

Police arrested thirty-four-year-old Mr. Jiang Peng, who works in an electronics company in Harbin City, at 2:00 p.m. on July 9, 2008.

27. [Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province] Ms. Cui Xiuju and Mr. Wu Shuming Arrested on July 8, 2008

28. [Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province] Repeated Arrest of Ms. Wang Haiying

Personnel from the Mingdenan Police Station in the Qiaoxi District arrested Ms. Wang Haiying at an Internet Café at 4:00 p.m. on March 19, 2008. They ransacked her home and confiscated a desktop computer, an MP4 and MP3 player, and some Falun Gong books.

Ms. Wang was put in the Shisanli Detention Center in Zhangjiakou City. The police tortured her until she was near death, and then told her family to pick her up and take her home. They arrested her again at an Internet Café at 11:00 p.m. on July 6, 2008. Ms. Wang is being held in the Shisanli Detention Center.

29. [Huadian City, Jilin Province] Personnel from the Huadian City 610 Office Persecute Ms. Xie Yanchun

Policemen from the Huadian City 610 Office ransacked Ms. Xie Yanchun's home in early July 2008. As she has lived away from home and rented her home out since October 2006, the police actually ransacked a non-practitioner's home.

30. [Wafangdian City, Liaoning Province] Evildoings of Fuzhou Town Police Station Personnel

Personnel from the Fuzhou Town Police Station in Wafangdian City arrested Ms. Wang Lin'e again. They took her directly to the Fushun City Brainwashing Center. Police also harassed an elderly practitioner.

31. [Weifang City, Shandong Province] Four Practitioners Arrested

Personnel from the Anqiu Police Station in Weifang City arrested Mr. Li Huanwu, Ms. Zhao Fengmei, Mr. Lei Shengliang and Ms. Yin Hongmei at 6:00 a.m. on July 9, 2008. Mr. Li was released that day.

32. [Li County, Hebei Province] Personnel from the 610 Office Plan to Put Practitioners in a Brainwashing Center

Personnel from the Li County 610 Office ordered every work unit and every village to submit a list of names of local practitioners on July 10, 2008. They planned to force practitioners undergo brainwashing in Baoding City.

Last year, personnel from the Li County 610 Office and from the county police department arrested Mr. Cui Xiaoxian, Ms. Feng Wenzhen and Ms. Cui Shumei on September 19, 2007. They held two trials for them, but falsified police evidence was exposed and the court officials failed to sentence the practitioners to prison.

Six practitioners were arrested in March 2008. Three of the six were over 60 years old. Police extorted more than 20,000 yuan from the practitioners and released them. They found a practitioner's salary bank card during a search. 610 Office head Zhang Yuexian extorted one practitioner's family for 5,000 yuan and tried to force her to write a guarantee statement.

33. [Haicheng City, Liaoning Province] Mr. Ran Zhongcai Arrested

Police arrested Mr. Ran Zhongcai at his home in the Tiexi Developmental District, Haicheng City on July 6, 2008. The police confiscated a satellite dish.

34. [Benxi City, Liaoning Province] Ms. Yi Jun Arrested

Ms. Yi Jun from the Mingshan District, Benxi City was arrested on the afternoon of July 9, 2008. Personnel from the Mingshan Police Station ransacked her home and confiscated a computer.

35. [Yongjia City, Zhejiang Province] Mr. He Gang, Mr. Tao Sheng and Mr. Yu Shengbi Sentenced

Mr. He Gang, Mr. Tao Sheng and Mr. Yu Shengbi from Yongjia City were sentenced to five, four and three years in prison, respectively, on July 8, 2008.

36. [Yuyao City, Zhejiang Province] Police Arrest Several Practitioners

Ms. Chen Aiyin and her sister from Huayuanxin Village, Yuyao City distributed Falun Gong truth-clarifying materials at 10:00 p.m. on June 29, 2008. Domestic Security Division personnel followed them, and policemen headed by Fu Mingshu arrested them. The sisters were put in in the Xiaodong Detention Center. Police ransacked their homes and confiscated many truth-clarifying materials.

Ms. Chen is being held in the Xiaodong No. 1 Detention Center; her sister's work place officials bailed her out.

37. [Chongqing] Ms. Zhang Chunxiang's Home in the Wanzhou District Ransacked and a TV and a Computer Confiscated

38. [Pingdu City, Shandong Province] Police Arrest Mr. Wang Yuzhong

Police arrested Mr. Wang Yuzhong from Liaolan Town, Pingdu City on the morning of July 11, 2008.

610 Office head Dai Yugang and civil army chief Fu Yuguo harassed Ms. Jiang Caifeng at her home on the morning of June 30, 2008.

39. [Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province] Ms. Han Yunhua Arrested

Personnel from the Wolitun Police Station arrested Ms. Han Yunhua from Daqing City at 3:00 p.m. on July 10, 2008. They confiscated an MP3 player, two electronic books and some Dafa books. They held Ms. Han in the Longfeng Detention Center for a week.

40. [Shenyang City, Liaoning Province] Ms. Jiao Lianfang Faces Illegal Sentence

Police arrested 60-year-old Ms. Jiao Lianfang on April 19, 2008 when she was talking about Falun Gong. She is being held in the Shenyang City Detention Center and is facing an illegal trial. Ms. Jiao had been sentenced to two years of forced labor in 2001.

41. [Changchun City, Jilin Province] Four Practitioners Arrested

Personnel from the Chengxi Township Police Station in the Luyuan District arrested four practitioners, including 40-year-old Ms. Zhang Haiying and Ms. Zhang Ping on the night of July 10, 2008. Ms. Zhang is being held in the Weizigou Detention Center.

42. [Liaoning Province] Ms. Zhang Shujun Arrested

Police arrested Ms. Zhang Shujun on the afternoon of July 8, 2008. She is being held in the Xindi Detention Center.

43. [Shenze County, Hebei Province] Several Practitioners Arrested

Personnel from the Shenze County Police Department and from the local police station arrested several practitioners on the night of July 7, 2008. They were Ms. Zhang Rongfen, Ms. He Qing, Ms. Ying Xin, Mr. Zhang Jianyong, Ms. Zhang Liuying, Mr. Zhu Pingxuan, Ms. Zhou Lanzhi and Mr. Jiang Rongjian. They are being held in the county detention center.
