Ms. Gu Xiuping is a Falun Gong practitioner from Kunming City, Yunnan Province. Previously, she worked in the Property Administration Department under the Kunming City Government. Ms. Feng Youxiu is Ms. Gu's mother. On October 4, 2007, they distributed "truth-clarifying materials" in communities close to the Shuanglong Bridge in Kunming City. They were reported to the police and taken into custody by officers from the Domestic Security Division in the Guandu District. They were taken to the Guandu District Detention Center.

On October 8, 2007, officers from the Domestic Security Division, the Yueyatang Police Station and staff members of the Yueyatang Community Office searched Ms. Gu's home without a warrant.

On October 13, 2007, Ms. Feng's 81-year-old mother passed away in grief and indignation. Officers at the Domestic Security Division did not provide any contact names or phone numbers for Ms. Feng's family members, so both Ms. Feng and Ms. Gu were not able to attend the funeral.

At the beginning of November 2007, without any legal procedures or explanation, Ms. Feng and Ms. Gu were sentenced to forced labor for one and a half years. At present, they are detained in the Dabanqiao Women's Forced Labor Camp.
