(Clearwisdom.net) Suizhou is a city with a population of over one million. It also governs Zengdu District and Guangshui City. Because it gained regional city status in August 2000 and Guangshui City was not under its control before that, we were not familiar with the situation in Guangshui. The following accounts are a sample of the persecution cases against practitioners in Suizhou City that we we received information about.

Over the past several years, four practitioners from Suizhou City lost their lives due to the persecution. Another practitioner's whereabouts are unknown; two left home and went into exile; 11 were forced to divorce their spouses; 45 were sentenced to forced labor; 98 lost their freedom in detention centers; three non-practitioners were implicated and also suffered persecution.

1. Practitioners who lost their lives due to the persecution

Mr. Li Changjun (http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2001/8/3/12719.html)

Mr. Li Changjun was born in 1968 and had lived in Suizhou City, Hubei Province. Li graduated from Gezhouba Institute of Hydro-Electric Engineering in July 1991. He received a Master's Degree in Applied Computer Technologies from Huazhong University of Science & Technology in July 1999.

He was fired by his employer at Wuhan City Tax Bureau, Hubei Province for upholding his practice of Falun Gong. Since July 1999 he had been detained many times in places such as Beijing, Suizhou, Wuhan and elsewhere. On May 16, 2001, the police arrested Li and some other practitioners when they were preparing truth-clarifying materials in Wuhan City. The police severely mistreated and tortured them during the illegal detention. The practitioners then went on a hunger strike to protest. After over 40 days of brutal torture, Li died at 10:08 p.m. on June 27, 2001. When his family later saw his body, they found it emaciated and seriously disfigured. His face, neck, and many other areas of his body had turned purple and black from bruising. His hands were clenched into fists, his teeth were deformed, and his back was so severely burned that it looked as though the flesh had been cooked. It was a truly tragic sight.

Notes:

(1) The labor camps will refuse admittance if 1) they do not have room 2) the individual does not pass the physical examination; oftentimes practitioners do not pass the physical due to having been beaten and tortured in detention centers

(2) Truth-clarifying materials: Flyers, pamphlets, posters, etc. with factual information about Falun Gong and the persecution to counter China's state-run media propaganda

(3) "Three Statements" -- Practitioners are coerced under brainwashing and torture to write these statements as proof that they have given up their belief. Created by the "610 Office", the Three Statements consist of a letter of repentance, a guarantee to never again practice Falun Gong, and a list containing names and addresses of all family, friends and acquaintances of the detainee who are practitioners.
