(Clearwisdom.net) On March 1, 2001, the Minghui website reported that Shang Shuichi from Yuzhou City, Henan Province died as a result of torture by the police (http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2001/3/5/5868.html). The following are some details that we have learned.

Shang Shuichi, male, was a 49-year-old teacher. In the winter of 2000 he went to Tiananmen Square to validate Dafa, but was arrested when he unfurled a banner. He was detained at the detention center run by the Changyang District Public Security Bureau.

To protest his illegal detainment, he went on a hunger strike for 8 days. Later a former Falun Gong practitioner who had turned against Dafa due to brainwashing and torture tricked him into eating some drugged food that left him mentally confused. While on the hunger strike, he suffered extremely brutal torture, as he had not revealed his identity. During the torture, three of his ribs were broken, and his feet were burned with a red-hot iron until they were blackened and couldn't be moved. All of his toe nails were burnt, split, and eventually fell off.

After he was drugged, his mind was sometimes clear, sometimes confused. One day he left the detention center with several fellow Dafa practitioners who were in a similar dazed state. The temperature in Beijing was below --10oC [14oF], yet the police took away Shuichi's coat and left him wearing only his underwear. In a swirl of ice and snow, he wandered around for a while and finally passed out in the snow. When his family received a message about his whereabouts, they carried him home. At that point he was already very weak and unconscious. Shang passed away a few days later around February 20, 2001. The Yuzhou City Public Security Bureau threatened his family not to reveal the extent of Shang's suffering to anyone, and then they spread the rumor that Shang had starved and was exposed to the cold while staying in a cave in the mountains.
