Today (April 9), a woman journalist from a CCTV (China Central Television) program visited Afghanistan. In an electronics store, she saw a TV showing CNN news from the United States. She was so surprised that she said: "You can watch CNN here!" Her surprise was understandable. Even the most backward country can still have media freedom. But in Mainland China, people cannot watch CNN or BBC. If you are on the Internet in China, whenever you type "www.cnn.com," you will get a notice that says "Unable to display this page."

In fact, the foreign media, including CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, don't always object to the Chinese Communist Party. To easily control people, the ruler often uses brainwashing methods to keep them in ignorance. In the short run, this might be somewhat effective, but over the long term, when the country faces danger, an ignorant and slavish population might not only fail to strengthen a ruler's ability to govern, but might bring disaster to the entire nation and thus cause the ruler to lose his throne. There have been many such lessons in the long history of China.
