Sun Yalan was a female practitioner from Hegang City, Heilongjiang province. On March 30, 2000, acting on orders from Wang Guoqi, the director of the Xinjiang Street, Xinan District police station, policeman Li Laiquan arrested her while she was at work and illegally confined her to a detention center. Ten days after her hunger strike, she was released because she was dying. One month later, she died as a result of the severe physical torture and mental abuse she received while in police custody.
