(Clearwisdom,net) (World Journal July 21) Reprinted from Xinhua News Agency: Recently, heavy storms pummeled Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province for days. The city had just suffered from the attack of typhoon "Liulian." The storm in some areas was extremely heavy. Half of the medium and large reservoirs were forced to release the floods that have been over the water level limits. The storm caused flood damage in some areas in Suixi, Lianjiang, Leizhou, Puotou, and other regions.
From July 15 to 17, the average rainfall in Zhanjiang was 201.5mm [7.9 in]. Due to the continued storms plus the rainfall from the previous typhoon, the water level in each large or medium reservoir has been rising steadily.
Twelve of these reservoirs in Zhanjiang had flood discharge, which accounted for half of the total number of reservoirs. As a result of the discharge from Hedi, Changqing and Wuling reservoirs, some downstream dikes were dangerously close to conditions of landslide or collapse.
Days of continued rain soaked the local crops again. Some areas were flooded. At many places on the small rivers in Suixi County, the water either came out of the dike or breached the dike, causing several towns to be flooded. There were up to 13 thousand acres of affected farmland. Some houses made of earth (clay) collapsed after being soaked in water. Many dikes, reservoirs, and irrigation channels were severely damaged.
In Gaoqiao Town, Lianjiang City, the accumulated rainfall was 248mm from July 17 to 18. The flood submerged 200 acres of shrimp cultivation ponds, broke down two mountain reservoirs and severely damaged the sluice gates. In Puotou District, 516 acres of land were severely damaged. In this same area, 116 acres of rice seedlings patched and 370 acres of dry land crops re-planted right after the typhoon "Liulian" were destroyed by the flood.
