THE former Portuguese colony of Macau marked its first anniversary under Chinese rule yesterday amid tight security as leaders, preparing for a visit by President Jiang Zemin, ordered the round-up of democracy activists and the detention of members of the Falun Gong movement.

Banners and bunting were hung across streets and the 5000-strong police force was on full alert as celebrations began.

Before Mr Jiang's arrival, police targeted potential troublemakers. They raided the home of one Falun Gong adherent after the group, which is outlawed in China, announced that it would petition the President to call a halt to persecution of Chinese members. A well-known democracy activist, Lei Kin-yon, was also detained for questioning, media reports said.
