Case Description:

Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Duoyun died on November 13, 2001, as a result of being persecuted. On September 26, policemen arrested an unknown Falun Gong practitioner while he was distributing Falun Gong truth-clarifying literature. During the interrogation, the practitioner's pager rang many times, and one of the numbers displayed on the pager was the home phone number of Zhang Duoyun. Since Zhang Duoyun had been the assistant of the Anfang Falun Gong assistance center, the police suspected that she was in touch with the apprehended practitioner, and they started to search everywhere, trying to arrest her.

On the morning of September 27, five people from the police (including Chief Song and policemen Wang from Hepinglu Police Substation in Hefei City, Gao from Public Security Bureau Dongshi Branch, and Wang from Sanlijie Police Substation) drove to the home of Zhang Duoyun's daughter, who lives in Sanlijie Railroad Dormitory. The police were trying to arrest Zhang Duoyun, but Zhang's daughter's whole family firmly resisted and did not cooperate with them. After 2 hours of harassment, they failed to take Zhang Duoyun away. The next day, the police came to her daughter's home and threatened them again. When they learned that Zhang Duoyun had gone to Shanghai to visit her relatives, they became furious. This was right at the time of APEC Meeting in Shanghai. They claimed that they were going to issue an arrest order in Shanghai and send her to a brainwashing class. Zhang Duoyun's daughter tried to persuade them patiently: "I hope you do not treat a seventy-year-old lady like that. She has suffered many tribulations in her life. During the Cultural Revolution, she was separated from her husband and son, which hurt her a lot. After she began practicing Falun Gong, she became healthy and happy, which saved a lot in medical expenses for her work unit. She became a better person and was kind to everyone. If you continue to pressure and bully her, then you will have to take full responsibility for the results." The policemen, however, wouldn't listen to her. Five times they came and searched for Zhang Duoyun. As a last resort, they even went to talk with her supervisors at her workplace, but they still couldn't accomplish their purpose because many of her coworkers resisted their unlawful actions. After Zhang Duoyun came back from Shanghai, she was forced to leave her home to avoid being arrested. Suffering from grievous difficulties and harassed by the policemen's continuous searches and threats, the elderly lady passed away on November 13, 2001.
