She was home with her granddaughter on the night of April 27, 2011 when more than a dozen people, including police and street committee staff, broke in and arrested her. They took away her Falun Gong materials, cash, and other valuables.

She was taken to Jilin City Detention Center. The detention notice indicated that Shao Guangmin, Wang Jiaxing, and Wang Hongbiao were in charge of her arrest. The prosecutor that handled her case was Wang Lei of Chuanying District Procuratorate.

Ms. Liu appeared in Chuanying District Court on August 19, 2011. Five Falun Gong practitioners who came to support her were arrested by plainclothes officers driving unmarked cars.

Ms. Liu was sentenced to five years and sent to Jilin Province Women's Prison in November 2011. Her family wasn't allowed to visit her.

Ms. Liu was released in 2015 but still faced constant harassment from the police. She died on June 23, 2017, at the age of 74.
