  • A 70-year-old Tells in his Own Words of Being Detained for Seven Months and Tortured to Near-Death

Shi Zhimin is a retired office employee of the Langfang County Fabric Factory in Hebei Province. He is 70 years old. In 1995, he had serious heart problems and was diagnosed as critically ill. After he started practicing Falun Gong, his diseases disappeared without medical treatment. After the persecution began, he publicly spoke the truth about Falun Gong. He has been arrested many times, illegally detained, and sent to forced labor camps. His home was ransacked. Finally, he was tortured to the brink of death and then sent back home. When he had slightly recovered, he had to leave home and wander about to avoid further persecution.

In December 2004, Shi Zhimin was clarifying the truth of Falun Gong in his hometown in Meng County, Henan Province. He was arrested by the local police and detained at the Meng County Custody Center. He went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution. He was handcuffed continuously. He was once tied up on the "dead man's bed," (1) unable to move, and tortured for three days. He quickly lost weight, and became skin and bones, unable to walk and prone to losing consciousness. He could barely talk, and his bottom oozed out pus.

By the end of May 2005, people from the Meng County Court went to the Meng County Custody Center and said to Shi Zhimin, who was too weak to say a word, "The trial of your case has started. Take a look at these documents." They then sentenced him to four years in prison. Around June 20, Shi Zhimin was sent to Zhengzhou Prison. He weighed only 50 pounds at that time. Because he was about to die, they sent him to the hospital.

Afraid of being held responsible should Shi Zhimin die, both the prison and the custody center wanted to alleviate their responsibility for him. On the night of July 6, police from Meng County Custody Center sent Shi Zhimin to the Langfang Police Department in Hebei Province. The police department refused to take him in, so he was finally sent back home. His family scolded the police for their maltreatment of Shi Zhimin. The police from Henan Province left in a hurry.

Following is the account given by Shi Zhimin about what he experienced over the seven month period.

On December 11, 2004, I went back to my hometown, Nanzhuangbei Village in Henan Province, to clarify the truth of Falun Gong. I was "arrested" by local people. Later the police came. Because I refused to be arrested, I was held down to the ground. They threw sand in my eyes so that I couldn't open them and handcuffed, kicked and punched me. They then dragged me to the police van while I struggled to get away. They pulled me back again and again. In the van, they took turns grabbing things from my pockets, and at the same time beating me. They also kicked me in the eyes and put something in my eyes. One of the policemen complained, "What? He only has a few dozen yuan in his pockets!" Another policeman took my phone card and said, "Why didn't he have a cell phone? Well, the card is still something."

They then drove me to Meng County Custody Center. They literally carried me to the cell. (Later, I learned from people in the custody center that it was the Meng County State Security Squad that had arrested me). Since I hadn't violated any laws, I went on a hunger strike for two months to protest the illegal detention. During that time, they kept force-feeding me. Before the force-feeding, they handcuffed me. Then they inserted a tube into my nostril. After the force-feeding, I remained handcuffed with the tube in my nostril--at the beginning for up to two or three days, then four or five days, before it was removed. I couldn't move, sleep, or use the toilet. I could only ask the inmates to help me use the toilet. It was not until February 8, 2005, that I started to take a little food. After the Chinese New Year, I started another hunger strike and continued until mid-May.

One day, I was tied spread-eagle to the "dead man's bed," with my four limbs handcuffed tightly, and with a tube in my nostril. I couldn't move at all. I was left like that for three days. If I moved even a little bit, they would accuse me of wanting to practice Falun Gong and they would tighten the handcuffs. On May 15, a policeman whose last name is Zhang, gave orders to force-feed me for ten days without taking the tube out or removing the handcuffs. In the past, they force-fed me once or twice every day, each time with one basin of substance. But now he ordered the force-feeding to be three or four times a day, each time with much more substance.

On the 19th, the head of the cell saw that I wanted to move, so he attempted to handcuff me tighter. At that time, he noticed that there was a hard mass in my belly, so they called for the doctor. The doctor looked at me from a place six meters above and said that both my feet were swollen. He said I was about to die. So they removed the tube from my nostril and released the handcuffs from my hands and feet. Only then did they find that there was pus on my bottom, and that it was very swollen.

I was sent to the hospital. At that time, it had been a long time since I was able to discharge excrement or urinate easily. I was so weak I couldn't say a word. I sometimes slipped into a coma. The doctors used a catheter to remove the urine from my body. I heard them say that I filled four big basins of urine each day. They replaced the catheter every week. They also gave me IV infusions. I was still slipping into a coma sometimes. When I woke up, I forced myself to have some congee, only to find it hard to swallow. Each time I could only swallow three to five spoonfuls of congee. After four days in the hospital, I improved slightly. They then sent me back to the custody center.

On May 31, they said that they would put me on trial. Policemen ordered the inmates to put clothes on me and carry me to the courtyard. They put me on the ground in the rain for 20 minutes. Then they carried me into a room about 12 square meters in size. A man presumably from the court said, "We are now starting the trial. Take a look at these documents."

Soaking wet from the rain, I was too cold to say a word, nor could I think clearly. I refused it. The man from the court then read me the sentence and said that I was sentenced to four years in prison. They asked me to sign the paper but I refused. I couldn't say a word.

Later the man from the court said to the police officers and the inmates who carried me in, "You have all seen his situation today. You can sign for him. "I saw two inmates and the policeman whose last name is Zhang sign the paper. Five minutes later, I was carried back to the cell by the two inmates. I felt my mind was clearer now. The inmates told me that the open trial had concluded. In fact, it was an illegal sentence. I won't recognize it.

About 20 days later, they saw that I was improving slightly, so they were eager to send me to a prison. They said if Zhengzhou Prison refused to take me, they would make something up, like needing to do something or buy something, and just leave me there. They said they would leave me at the prison for prison management to deal with.

On June 20, they sent me to Zhengzhou Prison. When the doctors in the prison did a physical exam, they found that I weighed only 50 pounds. They also noticed the pus on my bottom. They refused to accept me, because they thought I was dying. The guards in the prison asked the inmates to carry me to the meadow in the yard to wait for people from the custody center. But nobody from the custody center came. So they dragged me back to the hospital again. The doctors gave me an IV infusion just to see if it worked. Seeing that I discharged some urine, they said there was still hope. So they kept the IV in while complaining about the irresponsible police in Meng County Custody Center for leaving me there like that. They said that they would sue the police.

Thus the prison and the custody center pushed me back and forth, with neither wanting to keep me, in case I died. I heard the doctors say to the inmates that the Police Department of Henan Province decided I was to be hospitalized in Zhengzhou Prison hospital for treatment. Two weeks later, seeing that I was improving, they prepared to send me to prison. On the morning of July 6, they asked the inmates who were taking care of me to put my stuff together and get me ready to go to the prison. Before the IV infusion was done, they received notice from the Police Department of Henan Province to send me back to Langfang Prison in Hebei Province. At around 10 o'clock, Xie Guozhi, head of Meng County Custody Center, and Doctor Deng drove to Zhengzhou Prison and put me into the van.

On the way back to Langfang, Xie, in order to shake off the responsibility, spoke to the people in the van in a low voice, "Don't take your cell phone with you. If Langfang Prison refuses to take him in, do whatever you can to leave him there." Other policemen asked, "What if we can't drive the van out?" Xie said, "We'd rather leave the van behind, even though it costs several hundred thousand yuan."

On the evening of July 6, 2005, we arrived at Langfang Police Department in Hebei Province. The officers said that no one was on duty and asked them to send me to Xinkailu Police Station of Langfang City.

At the police station, a person there told Xie and his people to send me home. It was one or two o'clock on the morning of July 7. They knocked on the door fiercely. My family opened the door. The man from the police station and Xie Guozhi said they were sending me home. They took the four corners of the blanket and put me on the ground in the yard. Xie and his people from the custody center called out loud to me, "Shi, you are home now. Open your eyes and take a look." I was not very conscious. I couldn't talk. My body was only bones covered by a layer of skin and I was on the verge of death.

My family said to Xie, "Why doesn't he move? Is he still breathing? Why do you send him home when you have tortured him to such a state?" Xie tried to defend himself by saying, "Do you know how hard it is to bail him out for medical treatment? Do you know how hard it is to release him?" My family said, "Why didn't you do this earlier? We went to ask for his release twice and you wouldn't even see us. Now you send him back when you have tortured him to near death." They carried me inside and put me on the floor. Xie took out the sentencing order and the document indicating that I would serve my term outside of the prison. They hurried to leave while my family was still scolding them.

When they were gone, my family saw that my pants were wet with excrement and urine. Taking off the pants, they found pus on my behind. The flesh in that area had rotted away and the bone was exposed.

The foregoing is my experience during the past seven months since my detention on December 11, 2004. As a 70-year-old man, I was arrested, detained, put into a labor camp, and sentenced to prison by the evil Chinese Communist Party and Jiang Zemin's group of scoundrels, just for my belief in Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, and for wanting to be a good person. I will file my case with the international human rights organizations and file a lawsuit with the International Court. Here I want to call upon all the kind-hearted people in the world to help stop the persecution of Falun Gong. Restore the reputation of Falun Gong and its practitioners. Let justice prevail."

    Note:

    (1) Dead Man's Bed - The four limbs of the practitioner are stretched out and tied to the four corners of a cold metal bed frame. The practitioner cannot move at all. He is not allowed to get up to eat, drink, or use the bathroom. This treatment usually lasts from several hours to more than a dozen days. As one can imagine, this type of cruel torture causes severe damage to the practitioner's mind and body. See the illustration of this form of torture at

Little Benny Wants His Dad Back Home

Jiang Renzheng's eldest son Benny is now two years old, and a very smart child. He adores his dad and loves to play with him. Jiang Renzheng and his wife moved from China to study in Germany four years ago, and had two sons while living there. While they were in Germany, whenever Jiang played the Falun Gong music, Benny did the exercise movements with him. When his father sat in mediation, he sat beside him and moved his hands, copying the gestures. Little Benny also closes his eyes slightly and presses his two palms together in front of his chest. Benny's physical condition was very good. During the cold winter he would not let his mother dress him in a thick insulated coat. Benny only wore a jacket when running around, and never got sick. Benny's mother said that this was because he practiced the Falun Gong exercises with the adults.

Jiang Renzheng's family photo in Germany

When Benny smiles, his big eyes blink as if asking for affection. One time when he and his mother were waiting for the train, several older German ladies passed by. Benny smiled at them, and the ladies smiled happily back, and came to hold and kiss him.

In March 2005, the Germans rejected the political asylum application for Benny, his younger brother and parents. They were sent back to China and returned to his father's hometown, Benxi. The family's tragedy followed. On April 8, when Benny and his younger brother were playing at their grandparents' home in Shenyang, seven people came in and arrested his dad. Upon seeing dad arrested, Benny followed and ran to the doorway. He became terribly frightened and cried. Since then, he often cries and calls for his dad. He can't say complete words, but he calls for his dad often.

After his dad was imprisoned, Benny's little brother, who just turned one year old, stayed with his grandparents in Benxi. Benny and his mother stayed together, but their living was very unpredictable. His mother had to watch for police officers at all times, concerned about being arrested. Therefore, she hid at various different places.

Benny gradually began eating less and losing weight. He also frequently got sick and had a fever. Sometimes his grandparents had to take him to a hospital for intravenous injections.

Every time when Benny and his mother visited his grandparents and younger brother, Benny's grandma cried. One time his mother went alone to hide in a very far away place. The police had threatened that if she refused to write a guarantee statement, agreeing to stop practicing Falun Gong, they would arrest her. Benny stayed behind with his grandparents. Now it also became difficult for him to see his mother.

After Benny's dad had been detained for several months, his grandparents were allowed to take him and his younger brother to visit. As soon as Benny entered the prison's visiting room, he joyously jumped on his dad and asked to be carried. Dad found that Benny could already speak complete sentences, and he felt happy and sad at the same time. Dad carried him on one arm and his brother on the other arm, and played with them. Little Benny laughed and talked, while the grandparents could not stop wiping tears from their faces. Their son had left four years ago to study in Germany, and had returned with two wonderful grandsons. Now this innocent person has been sentenced to three years in a forced labor camp.

When Benny stayed with his grandma, she often told him with tears in her eyes that she missed his dad. Benny then also cried and called for his dad. Grandpa also got sad. He held his hand and went for a walk with him. Grandpa wanted to take his grandsons to visit their father. Therefore, he made many inquiries. He feared that his son would be tortured, as he had heard from people who knew what went on inside the labor camp that the camp staff treated Falun Gong practitioners very cruelly. Practitioners who do not write a repentance statement are often tortured to the death, using all kinds of torture methods. Falun Gong practitioners had been killed in the forced labor camp where his son was detained.

One time Benny's grandfather asked an official of the National Security Bureau why they arrested his son. He was told, "China does not allow people to practice Falun Gong. Therefore, he is not allowed to practice Falun Gong after returning to China. As long as he does not renounce Falun Gong, he won't be released. We have plenty time to keep him here." The elderly man expressed his grief, "I also do not know what law my son has broken. My son is a good person. If anything happens to him, I really won't want to live any more. I must find a way to get him released, my son is innocent."

When Benny finally met with his dad he was overjoyed. He tightly held on to him. When the visit was over and his grandparents were ready to leave the camp with him and his brother, he turned around, broke loose from his grandpa's arms, and ran to his dad and tightly held one of his hands saying, "Dad, let's go home."

Sun Shaomin Has Been on Hunger Strike for More Than 110 Days at Hulan Prison - His Life is in Great Danger

Falun Gong practitioner Mr. Sun Shaomin from Wuchang City, Heilongjiang Province is being held at Hulan Prison, and has been on a hunger strike for more than 110 days. He has been subjected to brutal persecution while holding the hunger strike, and his life is in great danger.

In 2004 officials at Hulan Prison began attempting to force the so-called "transformation" of more than 100 Falun Gong practitioners who are illegally imprisoned there by means of torture. They assigned special police details to travel to other cities and provinces to study methods of persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. Falun Gong practitioners who refuse to give up their beliefs are brutally persecuted, and practitioners' basic human rights are gravely violated. Practitioners are forced to write the so-called three statements and slander Falun Gong. The police instigate the convicts to collaborate with them by monitoring the practitioners' words and actions. The practitioners are often beaten, and the guards use many brutal torture methods, including tying the practitioners down and beating and shocking them with electric batons.

According to reliable information, Sun Shaomin, a Falun Gong practitioner from Wuchang City, instituted a hunger strike on April 22, 2005, which has lasted for more than 110 days. His life is in great danger. His weight has dropped from 176 pounds to less than 110 pounds. During the hunger strike his persecutors have used handcuffs to secure him while they held him down and force-fed him. During the more than four month long hunger strike, a tube has been inserted into Sun Shaomin's esophagus, causing serious injury. His pharynx and larynx are also very swollen. A doctor told the prison supervisor and a team leader, "Because the heart is so close to the esophagus, you can't force-feed him anymore. If you try to insert the feeding tube again, it could easily pierce the esophagus and penetrate the heart. A medical examination of him conducted at the Second Hospital revealed poor blood flow to his heart muscle. When his family came to visit him, he was removed from the hospital and returned to the prison. Currently, Sun Shaomin is suffering from massive hemorrhages due to injuries he received while being subjected to torture. He is suffering tremendous chest pain and is unable to straighten his waist. His life is in great danger. During the last four months, the persecutors have used many different methods to torture him. They surround him and beat him en masse. They subject him to sleep deprivation. They also torture him with electric batons and by forcing him to sit on the tiger bench.

His family has requested that he be released on bail for medical treatment, but the team leader of the prison's fifth section said, "We didn't arrest him. We're just doing our job, we can't release him. If he continues to refuse to eat, we will force-feed him. He is responsible for the consequences of the force-feeding."

Further illustrating the brutality, Falun Gong practitioner Zhang Xuewen from Fangtai Town, Hulan District was tortured to death on August 8, 2003 in Hulan Prison.

The Tortures I Suffered at Jiuzhan Police Station in Jilin City, Jilin Province

I illegally arrested and brutally tortured by Deputy Chief Li of the Jiuzhan Police Station in the Economic Development District of Jilin City, Jilin Province, along with policeman Yang Mingyu. The article below is to expose the crimes they committed against me.

    Jiuzhan Police Station
At approximately 9:30 a.m. on June 3, 2005, policeman Yang Mingyu and a woman came to my apartment in the Jiuzhan district of Jilin City with the intent of taking me to the Jiuzhan Police Station. While I was answering his questions, Yang suddenly slapped my face. At that moment I was lost. After a while, I realized what he was doing and asked him, "Why do you, a policeman, hit people at will? What's your name? What is your badge number? I will sue you (note: Yang's badge number is 204446)." Yang searched for the key to my apartment and demanded that I give it to him. I refused. Next, they ransacked my room and confiscated all the Falun Gong books I had there. Five or six policemen came in at this point and began to beat me. They kicked and hit me, and then punched my face while grabbing my hair (even now, my face still has the dark marks of wounds left from that beating). Some of the police officers twisted my fingers in order to grab the key I held in my hand. After they finished ransacking my room, the police carried in an iron bench, also known as a tiger bench, and forced me to sit on it. Two policemen forcefully tied my hands behind my back, with one hand over the shoulder and the other hand against the lower back. Then they applied a great deal of force to pull the two hands toward one another and then handcuffed them together. The handcuffs cut into my flesh.

I sat on the cold tiger bench in that agonizing position until 3:00 p.m., when the police station's Deputy Chief Li came. Li asked me if I knew any practitioners in Jiuzhan as he kept punching my face with his fist, cursing me, and kicking my feet and legs that were tied to the bench. I was cold and shaking. My limbs were painfully twisted, and I was unable to either catch my breath or talk. Li, seeing my situation, yelled, "Don't pretend in front of me. I have handled more than thirty practitioners. Situations such as yours are very common to me. You need a hell of a good fix. After a good and thorough beating, then you will be able to catch your breath." At that moment, I tried my best to control myself and made a few words come out of my mouth, "You'd better stop. You are so vicious to an elderly woman like me. I did not do anything wrong. I just read my teacher's books at home, is that a crime? Our practitioners are all good people, aren't you afraid of the retribution you'll get for persecuting good people? Good will be rewarded with happiness while evil receives retributions, that is heaven's law!"

Li said, "I am not afraid of any retribution. I have handled more than thirty practitioners, so what? I have received no retribution so far. I am still in the position of the deputy chief. In fact, my name is already on the 'list of evildoers.' I get paid by the Communist Party, so I work for the Communist Party." I tried to persuade him not to work for the perpetrators to persecute good people, but Li refused to listen and instead he beat me. Sometime after 5:00 p.m. Li stopped beating me and said, "Tonight I am on duty. When I come back, see how 'good' I will treat you. One year from tomorrow will be the anniversary of your death." After throwing these words at me, he left. I was locked on the tiger bench with both hands cuffed behind me from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

<>At around 9:20 p.m. Li and Yang returned. Li interrogated me once more. Yang Mingyu, standing beside him said, "If you tell us what you know, you will be released and return home immediately. Otherwise, tonight you will die. I'm telling you that higher authorities sent orders saying any deaths of Falun Gong practitioners caused by beating while in custody will be counted as suicides. No policemen will be investigated or considered to have any legal responsibility. You elderly women have heart diseases, don't you? If we killed you, we could report your death as the result of a heart attack, and nobody will ever care or even investigate it." (On November 6, 2000, I was sentenced to two years of forced labor because I was a Falun Gong practitioner. After six months in the forced labor camp, I had severe nerve damage causing heart disease, and was released on bail for medical treatment.) I did not pay attention to his threats, but instead kept myself focused on telling them the facts about Falun Gong and the persecution. I could feel the wisdom entering me, and I spoke very fluently and thoroughly as I recalled our teacher's words. My heart and mind were only thinking of Falun Gong, Teacher and my fellow practitioners. I must protect my fellow practitioners' safety and the safety of the materials production sites. As I had these thoughts, I felt very strong and peaceful.

It was nearly 10:00 p.m. by this time and another round of torture began. Policemen Li and Yang used many types of torture instruments on me. They released me from the tiger bench and tied me to a wooden chair. After this, they attempted to hang me from a pipe attached to the ceiling. Li and Yang each grabbed one of my arms and tried to pull them up from behind. I resisted, and called from my heart for Teacher's help. Suddenly, the handcuffs were open. The two policemen, shocked, backed away from me. Later, they again cuffed my hands behind my back. Yang inserted a long wooden stick in the handcuffs and turned it one way and then the other. Every time the wood stick was turned, the handcuffs got tighter and they cut into my flesh, causing me great pain. Before using this torture on me, Yang had tied a layer of wet cloth around my wrists so I would not be left with too many severe wound marks. Next, they put ropes around my neck, trying to suffocate me. The rope they used, which is very common in any hospital, had five to six strings of special cloth. They tied me up all over the body, from head to feet. Each of them stepped on my thighs with their feet, Yang pinched and grabbed my flesh, Li used a rubber club (also known as "wolf teeth") to keep hitting me on my stomach while at the same time pulling my hair. The pain was indescribable. It was beyond human words. I felt I had reached my limit with the torture, and cried out loudly, "Teacher, help me." Suddenly, I fell down from the wood chair I was tied to. I fell to the ground and fainted. Subconsciously, I heard Li say to Yang, "Maybe she's dead?" Yang answered, "She's OK, she's not going to die." Li and Yang carried me back to the chair, re-tied the ropes and cuffed my hands. Yang kept the water he used for washing his feet in a basin and added pepper water to it. This was what they would now use to force-feed me. With one hand, Li held my nose to force me to open my mouth, and with the other he grabbed me by the hair. Yang was supposed to do the force-feeding, but he hesitated. Li shouted to him, "Come on, do it!" They tried three or four times, but I would not open my mouth. Yang force-fed me only a little bit, and then stopped. I spit out the water and some of it hit Li's face. Li, now in a rage, said to Yang, "Yang, I'll force-feed her instead. You fed her too little. Go and get some human waste 'soup' from the toilets, and I'll feed it to her." I kept sending forth righteous thoughts: "Have the evildoers beat themselves, put the torture instrument on themselves and force-feed themselves." Li was tired, and breathed heavily. I felt no physical pain, but instead felt fine and very clearheaded. Li yelled at me, "You are pretending to be dead, so you must want to die. That's easy. I can remove your handcuffs and throw you into the Songhua River. We will say that you committed suicide." I started to show symptoms of the heart disease I got in the forced labor camp. They grew more and more severe, until eventually I was at death's door.

I was tortured until midnight. Li was extremely tired, and said, "This elderly woman is very strong to take all of this torture. No wonder she is a Falun Gong practitioner. Yang, you keep interrogating her. I have to take a rest." Yang dragged me from the tiger bench and pushed me into the duty room. No matter how many times Yang interrogated me, I kept saying the same thing. Yang said, "If you want to protect other practitioners, the cost to you will be a sentence of at least three years of forced labor, along with all the things a prison term brings." I said to Yang with a kind smile, "Your threats don't matter to me. I am a practitioner, and I have my Teacher to look after me. I listen to my Teacher. He makes the decisions, not you." I was tied to that tiger bench with both hands cuffed behind me until 2:00 p.m. on June 4, when I was transferred to the No. 3 Detention Center. The staff of the detention center saw that I was having difficulty breathing, so they refused to accept me. Yang and another policeman said to them, "She has no illnesses, we already checked her." The staff took them at their word and eventually accepted me into the detention center.

The maltreatment in the detention center caused my disease to re-occur. I wrote a letter to the authorities saying that I wanted to sue for the mistreatment I had received. The letter was forwarded to the Procuratorate Court by the detention center. During my detention, I did not view myself as an inmate like others did, and did not treat the place as one that was able to detain me. My understanding was that it was just a different practicing environment. No matter where he or she is, a practitioner must be diligent and do the things practitioners should do. During my twenty-one days of detention, I used every possible moment to recite the Fa, send forth righteous thoughts, do the exercises during the night and clarify the truth to the other inmates. In my cell, only three were practitioners, the other twenty female inmates all recited Teacher's Hongyin and expressed their willingness to learn Falun Gong when they were released. Three to four of them asked me to help them quit the Communist Party if I was released someday.

At 8:00 a.m. on June 24, the head of Jiuzhan Police Station and another policeman escorted me and practitioner Ms. Cui Xianghong to a forced labor camp in Changchun City. On the way to our destination, I kept sending forth righteous thoughts and asked for Teacher's help. I wanted the forced labor camp to refuse to accept me. I refused to cooperate with the police's persecution. When they asked me to move from one vehicle to another, I did not budge. The police then had to carry me to the next vehicle. I was unable to catch my breath or talk and my limbs were twitching. In my heart, I cried out for Teacher's help, recited the Fa and sent forth righteous thoughts. During the four hours on the road and then the physical exam at the forced labor camp, I did not stop sending forth righteous thoughts and asking for Teacher's help for even one second. It was really a life or death battle. I used all my righteous thoughts, kept Teacher close, and firmly believed in both Teacher and Falun Gong. Only my great Teacher could save me in such a terrible situation. In the labor camp, when the staff did the physical exam, when I was unable to walk the police (including police from the forced labor camp) carried me. Eventually, the forced labor camp refused to accept me. The doctor at the labor camp told the police from the Jiuzhan Police Station that I had lung cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses. When I heard them refuse to accept me, the symptoms of all these illnesses disappeared. In this battle of life and death, I safely broke away from that den of evil with righteous thoughts and Teacher's great compassion. It was a manifestation of the righteous thoughts. In my future practice, I must firmly follow Teacher and do the good work a Falun Gong practitioner should do.

Horrifying Conditions in Jilin Prison's "Naked District"
Second Urgent Appeal to Rescue Falun Gong Practitioner Yang Guang

Mr. Yang Guang, 50, is a Falun Gong practitioner from Changchun. Because of his steadfast belief, he was severely persecuted, and became paralyzed from the waist down from a cruel torture used to extort evidence from him. He is currently being held in Jilin Prison's "naked district," where he suffers humiliation and misery in the company of psychotic, disabled inmates.

Mr. Yang Guang was held in the No. 7 Public Security Bureau, where officials brutally tortured him in order to extort evidence. The police beat him ruthlessly, using all kinds of torture devices and broke his right leg. Later his hipbone became necrotic. The police had to carry him into the prison. Now, his right leg is disabled, his toes are deformed and festering, and he can no longer take care of himself. He is fifty years old but looks like a frail old man with his white hair and emaciated body.

Mr. Yang Guang is held in the "naked district" of the prison, where inmates are forbidden to wear pants all year long. Because of his paralysis, inmates made him a special chair, similar to a wheelchair. It has a steel pipe structure with four wheels, and a board for the back and sides, and with a big hole in the seat. Whenever he needs to relieve himself, other inmates wheel him to the toilet area, but because the side of the chair is blocked by a board, he cannot clean himself afterwards. He is surrounded by urine, feces and filthy smells continuously.

This district where Yang Guang and other disabled and psychotic inmates are being held never receives any sunlight. The conditions are intolerable, and it is extremely hot in the summer and cold in the winter. The sleeping quarters measure less than 60 cm (24 in.) in length, and the food is very poor, with no fat or oils used. When it is time to clean, they wheel Yang Guang to the water room, spray him with a pressure hose, and wash him with a mop, calling it a "cosmetic shower."

Mr. Yang was recently sent to the Province Center Hospital. His old injuries have not healed, and now his upper extremities are also disabled from intensified persecution. He is now completely disabled, yet the police are still persecuting him. They sent him back to prison from the hospital.

Ms. Zhu Xiyu Displays Banners and Demonstrates Falun Gong Exercises at Jindalai Square in Jilin Province for the Past Two Years

Falun Gong practitioner Ms. Zhu Xiyu has been displaying a banner reading "Falun Dafa is Good" and demonstrating the Falun Gong exercises for the last two years at the Jindalai (Korean Rhododendron) Square in Yanji City (a Ethnic Korean Autonomous Region), Jilin Province. She has been arrested six times and imprisoned for more than one year, but she has never given up her appeals.

As reported by the Minghui website (Chinese version of Clearwisdom.net) on June 1, 2005, Ms. Zhu has been illegally imprisoned and cruelly persecuted many times. In the last two months, she was illegally arrested three times. Recently, Yanji City Public Security arrested her again. She went on a hunger strike and was later released. Moved by her unyielding persistence in Falun Gong, local practitioners decided to photograph Ms. Zhu holding a banner reading "Falun Dafa is Good" and then report the event publicly.

On July 18, 2005, Falun Gong practitioners took pictures of Ms Zhu Xiyu holding a Falun Gong banner at Rhododendron Square in Yanji City. The banner says "Falun Dafa is Good" and "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is Good" and is displayed in front of the people who were doing their morning qi gong exercises there.

On September 1, 2003, the Henan Police Station in Yanji City arrested Ms. Zhu. They tortured her in attempts to extort a so-called "confession." On September 2, she was transferred to the Yanji Public Security building.

She was hung and suspended from a crossbeam with only her hands to support her weight. When she was unable to bear the pain, she fainted. The evil policemen were angry with Ms. Zhu, and they wanted to know the source of her truth-clarifying materials. They beat her head with their fists, grasped her hair, slammed her head against a wall, and kicked her. Her face was so severely beaten it was covered with blood and she was beyond recognition. After 13 hours of ruthless torture, her whole body was swollen and she was unable to walk. Ms. Zhu went on a hunger strike to protest the persecution and was force-fed by seven or eight prisoners. On September 19, 2003, after hunger striking for 17 days, the guards from the Yanji National Security building took Ms. Zhu to the Heizuizi Forced Labor Camp in Changchun City intending to have her serve three years of hard labor, but the camp refused to accept her.

On the morning of November 4, 2003, police from the Yanji City National Security building broke into Ms. Zhu's home and took her to the Heizuizi Labor Camp to serve two years of forced labor. While in the camp, Ms. Zhu suffered brutal torture. She refused to give in or to do hard labor, and went on a hunger strike. She was severely beaten, shocked with electric batons, imprisoned in isolation, and tied down to a "dead man's bed." (1) The policemen force-fed her so severely that her nose bled, and afterwards they threw her out into the snow. The police kicked her face and broke her front teeth. On December 3, 2004, after 25 days of hunger strike, she was finally released.

On April 13, 2005, the Yanji City Public Security Bureau again arrested Ms. Zhu. She again went on a hunger strike and was released a few days later.

In late April 2005, Ms. Zhu went to Rhododendron Square to hold a banner reading "Falun Dafa is Good" and yet again the police arrested her. She went on a hunger strike to protest against the persecution and was released a few days later.

In mid-May 2005, instigated by the Yanji City 610 Office, Ms. Zhu was arrested at her place of work at the Northwestern Asian Grand Hotel and taken to a mental hospital. Again, she went on a hunger strike and refused to cooperate with the evil persecution. She also resisted torturous drug injections. The evil people unsuccessfully tried every means possible to coerce Ms. Zhu, but in the end she was released again. (See Minghui website article on June 1, 2005 http://minghui.ca/mh/articles/2005/6/1/103114.html, no English translation yet available).

In early July 2005, Yanji City Public Security again arrested Ms. Zhu. She was released several days later after she held a hunger strike.

When Ms. Zhu displayed the banner reading "Falun Dafa is Good," many people had different reactions. Some cursed and insulted her, some hit her or tried to steal the banner from her, some people praised her, and some shouted, "Falun Dafa is Good!" When we quietly photographed her on July 18, 2005, some people showed their approval, but some people who didn't know the truth chased her away. Her banner was taken away that day. Facing people with different reactions, Ms. Zhu always smiled and tried to persuade people to be kind by using her compassion.

To this day, Ms. Zhu has persisted in displaying her banner reading "Falun Dafa is Good" and doing the exercises in Korean Rhododendron Square. We hope that all of the kind-hearted people in the world remember, "Falun Dafa is good," and that more people will sense the compassion of Falun Gong practitioners. We sincerely hope that more Chinese people will be able to choose a bright future for themselves.
