Dear Mrs. [name omitted],

Thank you for your recent letter of 6 August 2002 regarding China's treatment of Falun Gong practitioners.

I want to assure you that the Government remains concerned by China' s approach towards followers of Falun Dafa and expresses these concerns clearly and regularly. During our annual human rights dialogue on 14 August, Australian officials told Chinese representatives that we consider China's treatment of practitioners to be unacceptable and counter-productive.

Australia continues to believe that our bilateral human rights dialogue is the most effective way of achieving improvements in China's approach to human rights. We are also trying to help China improve its approach through practical help in areas such as legal reform and minority rights.

Australia will continue to urge China to improve its approach to the Falun Dafa at every appropriate opportunity.

Thank you again for your letter.

Yours Sincerely
