Canadian Capital Withstands Pressure from Chinese Embassy, Unanimously Votes for By-law Exemption for Falun Gong

OTTAWA, January 18, 2002 -- At the City of Ottawa Transportation and Transit Committee (TTC) meeting on January 16, a motion allowing a by-law exemption for Falun Gong practitioners was passed unanimously, allowing practitioners to hang large-sized banners on the fence across the street from the Chinese Embassy.

Ottawa Citizen Editorial: Yes, protest can be embarrassing

The Ottawa Citizen, January 18, 2002 Although its apologists insist the People's Republic of China is moving toward democracy and free speech, the truth is that the government in Beijing is tyrannical. We may safely assume its representatives abroad don't fancy dissent either. Falun Gong, for instance, has been protesting near the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa for two years. We imagine the diplomats inside don't much like the embarrassment caused when members of this peaceful movement tell passersby about Falun Gong practitioners jailed or killed in China.

(Clearharmony.net)

UK Members of Parliament are among many people who have publicly supported an end to the persecution of innocent Falun Dafa practitioners, and subsequently received slanderous propaganda materials from the Chinese embassy in London. The Chinese officials have been systematically sending materials to VIPs, non-governmental organisations and the media after reading their declarations of support on Falun Dafa websites. One Member of the European Parliament, who nominated Li Hongzhi (founder of Falun Dafa) for last year's Nobel Peace Prize, described how he has been inundated with "vile material" and persistent phone calls asking for the names of others who had made a nomination. He told how he was even invited to dinner by members of the Chinese embassy, and found the whole episode rude and intrusive. One UK Mayor received slanderous materials which he found upsetting, due to knowledge of the terrible abuses of human rights being suffered by Mainland Chinese Falun Dafa practitioners.
