Ms. Hu Mitao suffered severe physical and mental damage while serving seven years and two months for her faith in Falun Gong. She never recovered after being released from the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison on June 16, 2025. She passed away on July 10, 2026. She was 82.
Ms. Hu, of Nanchang County, Jiangxi Province, was born on January 10, 1944. She took up Falun Gong on December 14, 1998, and credited the practice for improving her health and turning her into a better person. After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the nationwide persecution against Falun Gong a year later, she held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted. She was held at detention centers twice and brainwashing centers three times. Her home was ransacked four times. The persecution also caused her family tremendous mental distress.
After arresting her on August 15, 2000, officers from the Tacheng Police Station confiscated seven Falun Gong books from Ms. Hu and took her to the detention center for transformation.
She was arrested one night in 2000 while she was asleep and taken straight to the detention center. The guards handcuffed and shackled her during her entire 33-day detention.
Ms. Hu was arrested again on October 12, 2005, during a police sweep. She was beaten by officer Wan Jianhua. After over 10 days at a police station, she was held at a brainwashing center for one month.
Ms. Hu’s last arrest was on April 16, 2018, while studying Falun Gong teachings with a few other practitioners. She appeared in the Xihu District Court on May 10 and September 16, 2019, and was sentenced to seven years and two months in late October that year.
Ms. Hu endured inhumane torture at the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison and passed away one year after she was released on June 16, 2025.
