(Minghui.org) A screening of the documentary Unbroken: The Untold Story of Shen Yun was held in Taipei on May 28 and in Kaohsiung on May 31, 2026. The events were attended by governmental officials, educators, and members of several local organizations.

Several Shen Yun dancers and musicians participated in the discussions after the screenings and described their experiences while touring with Shen Yun despite facing threats.

Perseverance Despite Repression

After the film was shown in Taipei, dancer Yingmei Zheng shared a touching experience after a curtain call in Italy in 2025: As the artists were walking from the theater to the shuttle bus, members of the audience followed and applauded them all the way until they boarded the bus. Ms. Zheng said, “That was an amazing experience. I could feel how much the audience liked Shen Yun. We were very encouraged by this.”

She said she was born in Harbin, China, and her grandmother was illegally detained and persecuted for five years due to her faith. “It truly was persecution, because practitioners did not do anything wrong and only remained committed to their faith.” Because she was tortured in prison, her grandmother ended up in poor physical condition and almost lost her hearing. But she still did not give up her faith.

Ms. Zheng commented on how meaningful it is to be able to tell people about this brutal persecution through Shen Yun’s performances and give them an opportunity to lend a helping hand.

Dancer Benjamin Lee said that Shen Yun was touring France when one theater received a bomb threat: “Everyone had to evacuate and wait outside. It was very cold that day.” However, the performers were not too worried and continued to prepare for the performance, which did take place. He said that, during the program when the “Falun Dafa Is Good” banner was opened, “We did not seek excitement or revenge; it was a heroic, not a tragic, feeling—true joy.” Mr. Lee emphasized the value of that faith: “No matter what happens, I will continue.”

Four Shen Yun dancers from Taiwan attended the screening in Kaohsiung. Dancer Antony Kuo originally wanted to be a painter. He noted that Michelangelo’s contributions to traditional arts were influential for several centuries, but Shen Yun’s dedication to restoring China’s 5,000-year divinely-inspired culture that was destroyed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is even more significant: “We know what we present on stage as well as the meaning it bears. The responsibility is significant while the path is long.”

Dancer Anna Huang explained that the core of traditional Chinese culture includes universal values and traditional moral values, which are very precious. “Through kind and beautiful art forms, Shen Yun presents China before the CCP and allows audience members to choose truth and kindness,” she said.

Dancer Yongyu Yang said that, while facing the CCP’s long-term threats through various violent means, Shen Yun’s commitment to reviving tradition is very meaningful. He believes that, in the face of pressure, it is even more important to do what is right and that the CCP’s disinformation will fall in deaf ears if audienced worldwide can see and feel the splendor of traditional Chinese culture through Shen Yun.

Audience Members Condemn Transnational Repression

Li Yu-tan, Adjunct Professor of the National Chengchi University, at the screening in Taipei (Minghui.org)

Li Yu-tan said that the documentary’s account of Shen Yun’s persistence offers a lesson for democratic countries: “Facing the threats, persecution, and challenges from the totalitarian CCP, we need to demonstrate greater willpower and resilience—that is, democratic resilience—to respond.” .

Li said the artists’ training reflected more than physical discipline: “They cultivate not only their bodies but also their minds. They use the greatest tolerance, forbearance, and endurance to face this kind of persecution by a totalitarian dictatorship.”

Associate Professor Cheng Chin-mo at the screening in Taipei (Minghui.org)

Cheng Chin-mo, Tamkang University Associate Professor, said the film showed how the CCP takes advantage of free societies to spread fear. “If we give up because we are afraid, then it succeeds,” he said after the screening in Taipei.

Cheng said he was moved by the young performers, who reminded him of his own children: “When I saw these young people—so idealistic, willing to dedicate themselves and give—I was truly moved.”

Chang Hung-lin at the screening in Taipei (Minghui.org)

Chang Hung-lin, Executive Director of Citizen Congress Watch, said, “This film very clearly tells you that the CCP is using its international influence to carry out cross-border repression. It even uses threats against Shen Yun performances to influence and control every place. That is a very frightening thing.”

Chen I-shen (Minghui.org)

Chen I-shen, an attorney, said it’s admirable that, even though many Shen Yun artists or their family members have been persecuted, they still courageously step forward to expose the truth and spread hope.

Michel Ching-long Lu, former diplomat and Taiwan’s representative to France, has seen Shen Yun 14 times. He said, “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance are universal values.” He believes that the CCP’s transnational repression highlights the courage and character of practitioners’ persistence in spreading the truth.

City councilor Chen Li-na attended the screening in Kaohsiung (Minghui.org)

Chen Li-na, a Kaohsiung City Council member, said the documentary showed the truth about the artists’ lives and allows people to see how the CCP crosses borders to inflict harm. She reminded people to cherish freedom: “When we choose silence, we may lose our freedom.”

Facing the CCP’s transnational repression and infiltration, Ms. Chen said Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan is already pushing forward relevant proposals, and the Kaohsiung City Council is also voicing solidarity. “So we are also looking forward to this topic. Not only in Taiwan, but in the entire world, we should all say no to the CCP’s transnational repression,” she said.

Yang Ting-hung attended the screening in Kaohsiung (Minghui.org)

Yang Ting-hung, an advisor to the Kaohsiung City Government and Professor at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, said the film not only presents the artists’ pursuit of excellence but also their strong faith while facing pressure. He said, “Keep going. Evil will not overpower the good. Justice will definitely prevail.”

Ts’ao Tz’u-pin at the screening in Kaohsiung (Minghui.org)

Ts’ao Tz’u-pin, the director of a plastic surgery clinic, said that Shen Yun artists are on the frontline of opposing evil and are upholding justice, spreading kindness, and demonstrating strength. He believes that any totalitarian rule that violates kindness and the laws of nature cannot last.
