(Minghui.org) I met my husband in college. After graduating, we worked in the same state-owned company. He was very talented and capable, and his supervisor valued him. He quickly became the Secretary of the Youth League in a branch factory. He was often busy and exhausted.
My husband’s coworker told him about Falun Dafa, and he started to practice in the summer of 1998. He suggested that I read Zhuan Falun. I didn’t quite understand the book due to years of atheist education. Because our child was young and I was busy between family and work, I didn’t pick up the book again. Nonetheless, I supported his practice because I saw that he became healthy and relaxed, and he was able to take fame and personal interest lightly.
Things took an 180-degree turn after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched the persecution of Falun Dafa. The propaganda from the state and its mouthpieces, the discriminatory looks from people, and the fear for my husband’s safety turned me against Falun Dafa. I wanted a peaceful life, and didn’t want to worry if the police would take him away. To make him give up the practice, I fought and argued with him—I even threatened to divorce him.
When I began practicing in 2008, many people asked me, “You resisted the practice so vehemently. Now you’ve begun practicing, what happened?” I want to share what I went through with my husband, and how I went from opposing to practicing Falun Dafa.
A Wonderful and Blessed Time After My Husband Began Practicing
One summer day in 1998, my husband came home from work with a copy of Zhuan Falun. He read it attentively that night and I asked him what it was about. He said that he didn’t quite understand it, and would let me know once it made more sense to him. Later he went on a business trip. He didn’t take much with him, but he took the book.
When he returned, he looked energetic, and he couldn’t wait to tell me what he learned. He said Zhuan Falun was written in plain and simple language, and it explains the mysteries of the universe, time-space, origin of life, connections between mankind and gods, and karmic relations. The book also explained that laws exist in the universe, and they are Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Only when a man follows the universal laws will he become a good person, enjoy good health and elevate spiritually. People came to Earth to return to their true selves.
The night he finished reading the book, many bad things were eliminated from his body. He felt really cold, like he had a bad case of the flu, and he had diarrhea. He quickly recovered, and afterwards he felt light and comfortable.
I couldn’t remember all of what he said that night, but that he was very excited and emotional. From that day on, it felt like he had become a different person: he was cheerful, optimistic, and relaxed. Work continued to be busy and stressful, yet he never complained no matter how late he came home. He took care of the children and did the chores. He was kind to the people around us and always offered to help. It was a wonderful and blessed time in our lives.
My Fear Reaches the Extreme
After the CCP launched the persecution and slandered Falun Dafa with its propaganda machine, people in the company we worked for started to target Falun Dafa practitioners. They talked to them one by one and pressured them to renounce their faith. The kindhearted practitioners became outcasts. The media spewed all kinds of lies to defame them—it was like the Cultural Revolution all over again. When people talked about Falun Dafa, they repeated what was said on television: the belief was superstitious and practitioners were ignorant and suicidal. The suppressive atmosphere made me, a family member of a practitioner, feel terrible and that we were discriminated against.
My husband was a division leader at the time, and was hardworking and responsible. In the beginning of the persecution, his superiors, who appreciated and cared about him, tried to convince him to give up the practice so that he could advance in his career. He told them how the practice made him who he was and that he benefited from the practice physically and mentally. He said that there was nothing wrong with practicing Falun Dafa, and it did not have any negative impact on society. He refused to renounce his faith.
Our relatives kept calling him to pressure him to give up the practice. I had no idea how much pressure he shouldered at the time, and until this day I still couldn’t imagine how he pulled through all of that. I only knew that I was stressed out. At first I was supportive and sympathetic, because I knew the persecution was unreasonable. However, day after day, I watched the slanderous propaganda on TV, and every day there was a different show that defamed Falun Dafa from a different angle. Even though I read the book and witnessed how my husband transformed positively because of the practice, I slowly began believing the lies. Instead of condemning the persecution, I condemned Falun Dafa. Not wanting anything bad to happen to my husband, I joined the others and pressured him to give up his faith.
We fought a lot, and I forced him to choose, “You want me and the child, or Falun Dafa?” One time he said sadly, “I want both. For me, you and Falun Dafa are not incompatible, and I shouldn’t have to choose. I know that they don’t understand me, but how could you not understand? How is it wrong that Falun Dafa has made me a good person? I understand the grievances and pressure you are suffering now. Time will prove that I am right.”
Gradually Falun Dafa became taboo in our home. As soon as the topic came up, I snapped. I could see that he really wanted to talk to me heart to heart, but I didn’t want to listen.
My fear came to fruition in 2002. The police arrested my husband at work, took his keys, and without notifying anyone, ransacked our home. When I came home that night, my mind went blank seeing the mess. Instinctively I knew something had happened to him. I called a family member, who came quickly and accompanied me to his work unit. The person on duty called the head of security, who said the police took my husband. He advised me to go to the police station.
It was night by the time we got to the police station. We were told to leave and come back the next day. I was worried and scared and I couldn’t sleep. The next day the head of security called me and said the police transferred my husband to a detention center. He asked me for 2,000 yuan, saying that he’d give it to my husband so that he could purchase daily necessities. My husband was released two months later because there wasn’t any “evidence.” He said he never received the money.
My husband still refused to renounce Falun Dafa, and as a result, he was removed from his post and became a technician in the workshop. He didn’t complain, and happily reported to the workshop. He worked hard and spent a lot of time learning new knowledge and skills. He was soon able to work on his own. Those who quietly observed him began to respect him.
My husband’s talent and job used to be the envy of others, and he made me proud. Now people looked at me differently because of him, and I had a hard time accepting the change. After the police confiscated his computer at home, I didn’t think he’d get a new one. He did a few months later and used it for Dafa projects.
That triggered my fear and anger to a maximum. After a heated argument, I didn’t think I could take it anymore, and I asked for a divorce. Seeing that I was determined, he agreed, “I just want you to be happy. It’s just that you probably can’t see it now. It’s not wrong to practice Falun Dafa and follow the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance. Practitioners are not as ignorant as the CCP portrays them on TV. You know me, and you should know what’s said on TV are lies. The practice helped me tremendously. When it’s framed and defamed, I should stand up and come to Dafa’s defense. That’s something a man of conscience would do. If you think a divorce can get you out of misery, I respect your choice.”
We went to the Bureau of Civic Affairs, but we didn’t finalize the divorce. We returned home together.
My Husband Is Praised and Trusted by His Supervisors, Coworkers, and Customers
Our lives were somewhat improved afterward. My husband continued to be capable, skilled, and responsible at work. He often made technical breakthroughs, which earned him trust and praise from his superiors and colleagues. He became an electrical engineer, and joined many major projects. He often worked overtime, and had to head to work in the middle of the night when a piece of equipment broke down. He never complained, and was many times awarded Outstanding Technology Worker. When project suppliers and construction contractors tried to treat him to dinners, he never went. He did good quality control at work without giving the suppliers and contractors a hard time.
One time a supplier wanted to replace some of the components and went looking for my husband at the construction site. He called my husband to his car, handed him some money, and asked him to do him a favor. My husband said, “I need money, but not this kind of money. I will ensure everything complies with regulations in projects that I am in charge of.”
One night the supplier and his wife came to our home at night to “have a chat.” Before they left, the supplier put a stack of bills in my hand. I wouldn’t take it, but they kept insisting. My husband hinted me to take it. After they left, we counted the bills and it was 100,000 yuan (~US$ 15,000). That was a lot of money for us at the time.
A few months later the construction was nearly done. My husband found the supplier and put the stack of bills in his hand. He told the supplier, “If I hadn’t accepted the money, you might have thought I’d make things difficult for you. Now that the project is wrapping up, please take the money back. I know that it’s not easy for you to make a living.” The supplier was dumbfounded, “Why? You don’t like money?” My husband smiled, “If you have to ask, let me tell you that not everyone is the same. I believe in Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance, and I can’t take this money.” The supplier was very touched, and they remain good friends today. Similar stories happened several times. When he mentioned them, I ridiculed him for being foolish, and he would smile.
Our life seemed to have returned to normal. Despite the persecution, he stayed calm and optimistic, and I slowly calmed down. Our relationship improved. When he saw that I was in a good mood, he’d share with me some of Falun Dafa’s principles, and tell me the reason for the current social chaos and the consequences of moral decay. “People should be good because it benefits society and others,” he said. Who in his right mind would argue with that, I thought. I could feel my heart slowly changing.
I Read Zhuan Falun
On evening in 2007, after we got home from work, my husband said that his lower back hurt and went to bed early without eating dinner. That night I heard him tossing and turning, and he kept going to the bathroom. He groaned quietly, and I knew he was in pain but didn’t want to wake me. I knew that it was serious because he usually was able to act fine even when in great pain. I offered him a painkiller, but he turned it down, “Go to sleep, I am fine.” It occurred to me that people on TV said that Falun Dafa practitioners were not allowed to take medicine when they were sick. I never knew if it was true because I hadn’t seen my husband sick since he took up the practice.
The next morning he was in so much pain that he couldn’t get out of bed. I felt his head and he had a fever. “Can you still go to work?” I asked.
“I’ll make a call and take the day off.”
“I will take the day off to go to the doctor with you.”
“No, I know what to do, don’t worry.”
He then asked me to take our child to school before I went to work. Before I left, I told him, “It’s most likely you have gallstones or kidney stones. It’ll be a small surgery at the hospital. But you told me that a practitioner won’t get sick or need medicine. I won’t force you, but if you want to go to the hospital, give me a call. If not, you’ll have to deal with the consequences.”
He smiled, “Relax, I know what to do.”
I couldn’t stop worrying at work and was a little upset with him. I knew that he must have been in a lot of pain the night before, but endured it because he didn’t want to interrupt my rest. I kept checking my cell phone, hoping that he’d call me to take him to the hospital.
I rushed home after work. As soon as I walked in, I saw that he was happily making dinner. Thinking about the way he looked that morning, I was in disbelief. He said, “You didn’t expect this, did you? I told you I was fine, and look at me now. Get ready to eat.”
When I asked what he did to get well, he said, “There is something that you might not understand. Cultivation is supernatural. People on TV told you that Falun Dafa doesn’t allow us to take medicine, but that’s just not true. There is more than one way to treat illness, such as acupuncture, massage, acupressure, herbal medicine, and qigong. Who doesn’t want to stay healthy? There is no way that one could be persuaded not to see a doctor when he is really sick. The propaganda you heard on TV is false. Falun Dafa isn’t what you think it is. Eat first, and I’ll explain it later.”
From then on, I no longer stopped him from practicing. He used to avoid doing the exercises in front of me so that I wouldn’t get upset. This was no longer true.
Something happened in 2007 that showed me that I had changed for the better because of my husband. I was interviewing for a vocational college. In one of the interviews, I had to answer professional questions. The committee members were experts in our province. The process was highly competitive. I answered most of the questions well, but the last question was beyond me, and I didn’t know how to respond. The committee members had good impressions of me, and gave me two answers to choose from. Suddenly the three words “Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance” came to mind, and I remembered that my husband once told me not to make false statements.
I told the members, “My apologies. I really do not know the answer. Thank you.” As soon as I was done saying it, I felt happy and relaxed, knowing that I had given up an opportunity. A committee member smiled and said, “You are quite honest.”
I came out of the interview, and my husband and child were waiting for me. I said to him with excitement, “I followed the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance today.” After hearing what I did, he was very happy, as it was probably what he had hoped for all these years.
That night, we talked a lot. I now understood what happened in the persecution of Falun Dafa. In the following days he had me watch videos about the false fire on Tiananmen Square and the peaceful appeal in Beijing on April 25, 1999. I finally understood that the brutal persecution was based on lies and that the teachings of Falun Dafa could bring hope to humanity.
In 2008, ten years after my husband began practicing, I read Zhuan Falun and joined him on the sacred cultivation path to return to our true selves. I thank Master Li Hongzhi for giving me the opportunity to become a practitioner.
