Sisters from England Deeply Touched

Allegra Tehamba and Sublime Tehamba are sisters and college students from England. They said the paintings gave them a good sense of reality as to what is happening in China and the impact of the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong.

Allegra said, “The paintings are very beautiful and professionally done. The labels next to the paintings provided abundant information. The volunteer explained the meaning behind the paintings, which helped us, because before we came, I had no idea these paintings existed. It is very inspiring.”

Sublime felt the same way. She said the artworks were very moving, “The paintings contain very strong emotions, and you can feel what the people in the paintings went through.”

Allegra was impressed by the little girl holding her parents’ ashes: “The scene was very vivid; her eyes were filled with sorrow. I couldn’t ignore it.”

Sublime specifically mentioned a painting in which the doctor is illegally harvesting an organ from a living Falun Gong practitioner who refused to renounce his faith. The painting touched her because it showed real human reaction in front of life and death. “The artist successfully captured the moment when the doctor realized what he did was wrong and felt guilty,” she said, “He also presented the bad people who continued to do evil.”

When talking about the painting with an elderly woman holding her son, Sublime noticed her hands: “Her hands are painted with delicate details; you can tell at a glance that she does hard labor every day. The painting brings to live the indomitable spirit in her eyes and the hardships she experienced.”

Allegra especially enjoyed the paintings that showed various realms and dimensions. “These paintings are amazing, and make people want to learn more about the significance behind them,” she said.

Student Wishes to Help End the Persecution

Guilherme from Brazil is attending school in Belgium. He said his initial impression of the paintings was: “Overwhelming.”

He said the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance are wonderful and pure. “Unfortunately the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is suppressing these principles,” he said. He felt the message conveyed by the paintings was not abstract but closely related to everyone’s life. “The principles of Truthfulness, Compassion and Forbearance are important for everyone. These values are essential when we interact with others.”

Guilherme said the society presented in the paintings under the CCP’s rule made him feel heavy: “The sad thing is, under the CCP, some people can’t live the way they want to. They are persecuted for wanting to pursue inner peace and live peacefully with others. It is not fair.

“I truly wish that we could do something to stop the persecution, stop the oppression of people who just want to live their lives,” he added.

“The paintings are powerful and clearly expressed how (the persecution) changed an everyday person’s life.”

He was most impressed by the painting of children playing in the rain. “That painting made me very emotional. On the surface it shows the children playing, but I could feel the deeper meaning. Everyone just wants a normal, simple life yet it was taken away from them.”

The takeaway message from the exhibition for Guilherme was that, “When a person truly sensed [the persecution] is real and taking place, he should realize that no one should distance them from it or ignore it.”

The art exhibition made Guilherme realize that art can be an important tool to reveal reality and awaken one’s conscience, “I learned a very clear and important message.”
