(Minghui.org) A 50-year-old woman in Hanchuan City, Hubei Province, was released on July 1, 2025, after serving nine months for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Wang Yanhong was arrested on October 2, 2024, after the security guard in a residential area reported her for distributing Falun Gong informational materials there. Officers from the Xiaohe Police Station took her to the Hanchuan City Second Detention Center.
Officers from the Hanchuan City Domestic Security Division raided Ms. Wang’s home while she was in detention. They did not find any Falun Gong books or materials.
Ms. Wang’s father approached the Hanchuan City Domestic Security Office upon learning that her case was to be submitted to the Hanchuan City Procuratorate. He was referred to the Xiaohe Police Station. He went there on October 25, 2024 and was told that the procuratorate had already issued a formal arrest warrant for his daughter.
The Yingcheng City Court tried Ms. Wang on January 16, 2025. Both Yingcheng City and Hanchuan City are under the administration of Xiaogan City in Hubei Province.
The prosecutor claimed that over 300 copies of Falun Gong materials were found in Ms. Wang’s bag when she was arrested. She countered that she only had a little over 40 copies with her that day. She added that she broke no law in practicing or spreading information about her faith, as no law in China has criminalized Falun Gong. She refused to admit guilt as demanded by the presiding judge.
Ms. Wang’s lawyer also questioned the prosecution’s evidence and requested that she be released on bail. The judge denied the request and adjourned the session. He sentenced Ms. Wang to nine months at an unknown time. She completed her term on July 1, 2025.
