A Kunming City, Yunnan Province resident faced continued harassment after completing a three-year prison term in September 2024 for her faith in Falun Gong. Her health quickly declined and she passed away on April 15, 2025. She was 76.
Ms. Liu Rongxian, a retired worker of the Kunming Dyeing and Weaving Factory, had many health problems when she was in her 30s, including Meniere’s disease, duodenal ulcer, atrophic rhinitis, a heart condition, chronic colitis, and arthritis. She tried different treatments, but nothing worked.
After Ms. Liu began to practice Falun Gong at a friend’s recommendation on March 9, 1999, the atrophic rhinitis that had bothered her for years went away within a week. Through reading Zhuan Falun, the main text of Falun Gong, she continued to improve her character, and her arthritis and other health problems disappeared as well.
When the persecution started months later in July 1999, Ms. Liu remained firm in her faith and was repeatedly targeted.
Ms. Liu was arrested on March 31, 2011 for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong, together with another practitioner Ms. He Guizhen. The police ransacked Ms. Liu’s home and confiscated her Falun Gong books, portrait of Falun Gong’s founder, informational materials, computer, printer, and other personal belongings. Both Ms. Liu and Ms. He, now 83, were sentenced to three years by the Kunming City Court.
While serving time at the Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison, Ms. Liu was forced to sit on a small stool for four hours in the morning and then do forced labor (sewing beaded embroidery) from afternoon until after 10 p.m. Sometimes she was also subjected to brainwashing.
Later on, Ms. Liu was transferred to division 7 and still forced to sew beaded embroidery and skirt decorations from 7:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. every day, until she was released.
Ms. Liu was arrested again on September 28, 2021 and sentenced to three years with a 10,000-yuan fine by the Xishan District Court. She was again subjected to brutal torture at the Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison.
After Ms. Liu was released in September 2024, the police and local residential committee staffers continued to harass her. She died on April 15, 2025.
