Ms. Liu Shumei, of Bin County, Heilongjiang Province, died in May 2019, after enduring years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. She was 77.

Ms. Liu was first arrested on January 15, 2000 and held at the Bin County Second Detention Center for 29 days. She was arrested again in June 2000 after being reported for raising awareness about the persecution. She was held at the same detention center for 35 days. 

On July 18, 2000, shortly after her release, she went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong, only to be arrested there and taken back to Bin County. She was given one year at the Wanjia Forced Labor Camp. 

Although Ms. Liu was released early, she was arrested again on May 23, 2001 and held at the Bin County Second Detention Center. Not long after, she was given another one-year term at the Wanjia Forced Labor Camp. 

Ms. Liu’s next arrest was on August 2, 2010, for talking to people about Falun Gong on the street. She was held at the Bin County Second Detention Center for 15 days. 

Ms. Liu’s last arrest was on June 23, 2011, for spending paper bills printed with information about Falun Gong. She was later sentenced to seven years in prison. Due to her dangerously high blood pressure, she was released on medical parole. The authorities came to check on her on a regular basis. They threatened to take her back into custody as soon as she recovered. Due to the mental pressure, her condition continued to decline over the years. She eventually passed away in May 2019.
