79-Year-Old Guangdong Woman Sentenced to 2 Years for Practicing Falun Gong, Serving Time Outside of Prison

Jan. 28, 2025 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Guangdong Province, China

(Minghui.org) Ms. Zhong Yuanying, 79, from Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, was sentenced to two years and fined 30,000 yuan for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Ms. Zhong’s conviction stemmed from her arrest at home on July 12, 2024, after she was reported for talking to people about Falun Gong at a bus station hours earlier. She was taken to the Zhuyang Detention Center later that afternoon and her family had 10,000 yuan extorted from them. Due to her poor health, she was released on bail the next day.

Two police officers harassed Ms. Zhong on August 26, 2024, and ordered her to sign a document to plead guilty. She refused to comply.

Ms. Zhong was notified on October 17, 2024 to appear in the Meixian District Procuratorate the next day. She went and was again ordered to plead guilty. She insisted that she didn’t violate any law by practicing Falun Gong.

The Meixian District Court heard Ms. Zhong’s case on November 26, 2024. She was allowed to go home afterwards and learned of her prison sentence in mid-January 2025. The verdict stated that she was to serve time outside of prison. She was also forced to pay her court fine.
