Guangxi Woman Dies Two Days After Being Released from Prison in Critical Condition

A Beihai City, Guangxi Province resident died on July 7, 2024, two days after her family picked her up from the Nanning City Women’s Prison at the authorities’ request. Ms. Xu Shanping’s term was not up yet, but she had developed a serious medical condition while serving time for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. She was 61.

Ms. Xu was arrested at around 4 p.m. on December 19, 2020, together with another practitioner Ms. Tan Zezhen, 76, after being followed by the police for distributing informational materials about Falun Gong near a school. The police ransacked their homes and held them at the Beihai City Detention Center.

According to an insider, Ms. Xu was later transferred to the Nanning City Women’s Prison. The exact timing and her prison term weren’t clear. It’s also not known whether Ms. Tan was sentenced or where she is currently detained.

The prison informed Ms. Xu’s family in 2023 that she had developed uterine fibroids. Her family applied for medical parole on her behalf, but were rejected. The prison suddenly informed Ms. Xu’s family to take her home in early July 2024. She returned home on July 5, only to die two days later. She was merely skins and bones.

Not knowing Ms. Tan’s current whereabouts, her daughter, Ms. Chen, who currently resides in Sydney, Australia, is calling on the authorities to release her mother. Ms. Chen said that in the past 25 years, Ms. Tan has had her home ransacked more than 20 times. She served two labor camp terms for a total of three years and nine months. She was also repeatedly held in brainwashing centers, suffering all kinds of physical torture and mental pressure. The family are very worried about her now.
