A Jingmen City, Hubei Province, resident, passed away on July 14, 2024, six years after he finished serving a two-year term for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. He was 51.

Mr. Peng Yaxin, a former petrochemical plant technician, drove to the Shenji Town, Shayang County, with Ms. Zhang Guangjie, Ms. He Shifeng and Ms. Fu Chuanying to distribute Falun Gong materials on March 13, 2016. They were stopped and arrested by officers of the Shenji Town Police Station and detained at the Shayang County Lockup.

Ms. He and Ms. Fu were released days later. Mr. Peng was transferred to the Shayang County Detention Center on March 18 and Ms. Zhang was taken to the Huyaguan Detention Center. The Shayang County Procuratorate indicted all four of them on June 17.

The practitioners appeared in the Shayang County Court on September 23, 2016. Although the Shayang County Procuratorate withdrew the indictment against Ms. He and Ms. Fu on April 24, 2017, Ms. Zhang and Mr. Peng were sentenced to three and two years, respectively, around December 2017, with each also fined 2,000 yuan. Ms. Zhang and Mr. Peng appealed with the Jingmen City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold their original verdict weeks later.

When Mr. Peng’s family was finally allowed to see him for the first time since his arrest, on December 27, 2017, they were shocked to see a gaunt figure walking towards them with a wobble. Once a healthy man, Mr. Peng, who stood at 5’7’’, weighed only 90 pounds. He told his family that he could only keep down some liquid food.

Mr. Peng’s lawyer and family filed multiple requests before to have him released on medical parole, but judge Shui Shuang of the Jingmen City Intermediate Court denied their request each time, saying that [Mr. Peng] looked pretty good to him.

Mr. Peng fainted in the detention center on January 21, 2018. He was finally released two days later, after the detention center officials obtained more than 20 approvals from various departments.

Upon returning home, he told his family that in addition to physical torture, he was also given shots of toxic substances in the detention center, which destroyed his health. He struggled to recover and eventually passed away on July 14, 2024.

Other than the two-year prison term, Mr. Peng was given two years at the Shayang Forced Labor Camp in September 1999, for going to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. When he finished serving the term, the authorities didn’t release him, but took him to a brainwashing center for another three months. He was monitored around the clock after returning home.

Mr. Peng was arrested again on June 30, 2003 and detained for an unknown period of time.
