Shandong Man Appeals a Two-Year Wrongful Sentence for Practicing Falun Gong

Aug. 16, 2024 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Shandong Province, China

(Minghui.org) A Longkou City, Shandong Province resident filed an appeal with the Yantai City Intermediate Court against a two-year sentence for practicing Falun Gong. While awaiting results at the Longkou City Detention Center, Mr. Guo Meixue was handcuffed and shackled after he went on a hunger strike in July 2024 to protest the persecution.

Mr. Guo was arrested on February 28, 2024, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. He went on a hunger strike after being taken to the Longkou City Detention Center and did not resume eating and drinking until the sixth day.

Two staffers from the Longkou City Procuratorate deposed Mr. Guo at the detention center on the morning of March 8. Guo Fudui (no relation), one of the arresting officers from the Longkou City Domestic Security Division, came that afternoon to notify him that he had just been issued a formal arrest warrant.

The police submitted Mr. Guo’s case to the procuratorate in May 2024. The Longkou City Court held a hearing on June 5, 2024, and later sentenced him to two years (exact date unknown). According to an insider, he started another hunger strike in July and was taken to the Beihai Hospital for force-feeding multiple times. The guards also handcuffed and shackled him.

Prior to his latest prison sentence, Mr. Guo was arrested another time in June 2007, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. He was given a two-year term at the Shandong Province Second Men’s Labor Camp, also known as the Wangcun Forced Labor Camp.

Because he refused to renounce Falun Gong, the guards ordered the inmates to monitor him. He was only allowed to sleep between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. About three weeks into his detention, a guard attached his right hand to the upper bunk bed and his left hand to the lower bunk bed, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. He was unable to stand straight or squat. The guard director Luo Guangrong came over from time to time to pinch his ribs. The pain was excruciating and he wasn’t given anything for lunch.

Mr. Guo went on a hunger strike in protest on January 6, 2008. Director Luo ordered several guards to carry him to his office and beat him. They then took him to a solitary confinement cell, where they hung him up by his wrists and shocked him with electric batons. The pain was like being bitten by snakes. They also gave him only a tiny steamed bun for each meal.

The persecution deeply traumatized Mr. Guo’s wife. Her heart would pound as soon as she heard the police siren.
