(Minghui.org) A resident of Heishan County, Liaoning Province was sentenced to four years and fined 30,000 yuan on March 25, 2024 for his faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Mr. Han Chunlong’s latest sentencing was preceded by a prior four-year jail term (2012-2016), also for practicing Falun Gong. He is currently appealing his second prison sentence while being held at the Shenhe District Detention Center in Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning Province.
Mr. Han was sending text messages about Falun Gong outside the Mukden Palace (a tourist attraction in Shenyang City) at 1 p.m. on October 2, 2023, when he was reported by a teenager and seized by officers from the Huangcheng Police Station. The police interrogated him for 30 minutes and took him to the Shenhe District Detention Center a little past midnight.
The Dadong District Court scheduled a hearing of Mr. Han’s case for 9 a.m. on February 27, 2024 but did not notify his family until a few minutes before its start. As Heishan County is about 70 miles away from Shenyang City, his family was unable to get to the courthouse in time to attend his hearing.
Mr. Han was allowed to have a phone call with his family after the hearing. He said that he wasn’t given advance notice of the hearing and that he did not know he was going to be tried until he was brought to the courthouse.
The court sentenced Mr. Han to four years on March 25, 2024. He is now appealing the verdict.
