Persecution of Falun Gong Practitioners in Fanjiatai Prison

Nov. 25, 2024 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Hubei Province, China

(Minghui.org) The Fanjiatai Prison in Shayang County, Hubei Province, has been actively participating in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners since 1999.

Their slogan is to have an “Upright Culture,” and the prison requires all inmates to memorize traditional culture such as “Di Zi Gui” (Standards for being a Good Pupil and Child). However, in reality the prison uses various violent methods, including trying to force practitioners to renounce and denounce Falun Gong.

An example of the guards’ efforts to transform practitioners, is when they forced Mr. Hong Kaihua to step on the photo of Falun Gong’s founder, and then placed the photo near other practitioners’ pillows. The guards also denied the practitioners to receive family visits, and used corporal abuse to make them submit to demands.

Practitioners who remain steadfast in their faith are subjected to brutal torture and some have even been tortured to death.

Mr. Li Dayao, a Jianli City, Hubei Province resident, passed away at Jianli City No. 1 People’s Hospital on November 30, 2019, twelve days after he was released on medical parole by the Fanjiatai Prison. His family later learned that his mouth had been stuffed with rubber tubes, and all of his teeth had been knocked out, which helped explain why he couldn’t talk, but kept crying in his final days.

Mr. Liu Deyu was handcuffed to window grilles for 15 days, with his feet off the ground. He died in the prison in March 2024, less than a year after being admitted. The prison claimed that he died of illness.

Another practitioner, Mr. Wang Bangjie, from Tongshan City, died shortly after his release.

Torture Methods Used

Torture methods used in Fanjiatai Prison to persecute Falun Gong practitioners are listed below. The prison not only tortures the practitioners but also forbids them from appealing against the verdicts, and deprives them of their rights to communicate with their families.

Corporal Punishment

All practitioners are subjected to corporal punishment where they are forced to stand, sit, or squat in certain positions for a long time every day, except when they were eating or using the restroom. The intense torture results in many practitioners having swollen feet, festered buttocks, and dragging feet when walking.

Mr. Li Guangqing, 70, was forced to stand every day for more than one year. His calves became as large as his thighs, he could no longer wear regular shoes, and could only fit into slippers.

Sprayed with Chili Water

Many practitioners havetheir eyes and faces sprayed with chili water. The guards once tied Mr. Li Guangqing up and sprayed him with chili water, causing his eyes and face to become red and swollen for a long time.

Force-feeding and Injected with Unknown Drugs

Practitioners who refuse to be transformed are force-fed and injected with unknown drugs. Mr. Zhang Qingyuan, a former paralympic track and field champion from Wuhan City, was not only subjected to corporal punishment and violent abuse, but also force-fed and injected with unknown drugs in his head. He was previously forced to live away from home for 17 years before being arrested and sentenced to a four-year prison term in 2023.

Deprived of Restroom Use

Mr. Chen Quanlong from Guangshui City was forced to squat for a long period of time and not allowed to use the restroom, causing him to wet his pants.

Forced to Work Without Pay

One of the common torture methods used is to force practitioners to do manual and intense work for long hours without pay. Practitioners are verbally abused, deprived of sleep, or put on strict management if they can not finish the quota. An elderly practitioner named Mr. Ma, a native of Henan Province, was often forced to stand and not allowed to sleep, as he could not finish his task.

Violent Abuse

Mr. Shan Furong from Xiangyang City was transferred from Xiangnan Prison to Fanjiatai Prison. His eyes became blind from the torture and he could not take care of himself. He was also frequently slapped in his face with shoes and had his wrist twisted.
