For Talking to People about Her Faith, Hunan Woman Sentenced to Three Years

Jan. 6, 2022 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Hunan Province, China

(Minghui.org) A woman in Huaihua City, Hunan Province, was sentenced to three years on November 16, 2021, for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Nie Tiemei, 50, is retired from the Huaihua City Power Bureau. She was arrested on September 14, 2020, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. Two other practitioners, Ms. He Xiuyun and Ms. Zhou Mangao, were arrested with her.

All three were taken to the Tuanjie Police Station. Ms. Nie and Ms. He had their homes ransacked. According to Ms. Nie’s family, the police didn’t show any ID or search warrant before the raid. Her laptop and two printers were confiscated.

While Ms. Zhou was released around midnight after a problem with her health, the two other women were held in custody for three months. Ms. Nie was released on bail on December 1 and Ms. He was released on bail on December 18. Both were also put under residential surveillance.

The police submitted Ms. Nie’s case to the Hecheng District Procuratorate on May 31, 2021. The procuratorate extended her original residential surveillance set to expire on that day for another six months, until November 30.

When Ms. Nie refused to sign the residential surveillance paperwork, Li Manqun of the Hecheng District Procuratorate said to her, “Some Falun Gong practitioners refused to sign the paperwork, but they were still sentenced to prison.”

The Hecheng District Procuratorate on June 16 moved Ms. Nie’s case to the Zhijiang County Procuratorate, which indicted her a month later on July 16. Judges Jiang Xingliang, Zhang Jun, and Zhu Xiaomei were assigned to handle her case.

Ms. Nie was informed on July 22 that she was scheduled to appear in court on August 4. The court prevented her family from attending the session, citing the pandemic as an excuse. Her lawyer entered a not guilty plea for her. She also testified in her own defense. She returned home after the hearing.

Several officers broke into Ms. Nie’s home on October 14 and took her to the Huaihua Detention Center. Other officers ransacked her home the next day and confiscated her new laptop, printer, and several booklets about Falun Gong.

In the detention center on November 16, the court sentenced Ms. Nie to three years in prison.
