(Minghui.org) Brainwashing centers in China are officially labeled as “legal education centers” or “drug rehabilitation centers.” They were established by the 610 Office, an extralegal agency specifically created to persecute Falun Gong.
There are a number of brainwashing centers in Wuhan City, Hubei Province and its surrounding counties. Since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, the authorities in Wuhan have closely followed the regime in suppressing the practitioners. They were especially experienced in hosting brainwashing sessions against the practitioners.
One of the brainwashing centers was built in 2021 at Huangpo District, a remote area outside the city. Known as Wangjiahe Brainwashing Center, the building is two stories, surrounded by high walls with a metal gate.
This brainwashing center was built in response to the “zero-out” campaign that the communist regime launched in 2020 in an attempt to force every Falun Gong practitioner on the government’s blacklist to renounce their faith. The authorities have also repurposed ten existing facilities across Wuhan and used them to conduct brainwashing sessions since the beginning of 2021 to incarcerate steadfast practitioners.
The newly built center has hired two former Falun Gong practitioners who had given up the practice under pressure, with a daily salary of 200 yuan each. Their job is to “transform” detained practitioners with other hired henchmen, most of whom are young men who don’t have a full-time job.
Around a dozen practitioners have been detained in the new brainwashing center at one point or another since April 2021. Each practitioner was confined in a separate room on the second floor. With no window or lights on, the rooms are pitch dark. Practitioners are forced to watch propaganda videos that slander Falun Gong. Sometimes they are not allowed to sleep for several days. They are ordered to write guarantee statements and threatened with prison if they didn’t comply. Some practitioners went on hunger strikes to protest but were force-fed.
