(Minghui.org) A woman in Kaijiang County, Sichuan Province, was sentenced to five and a half years for practicing Falun Gong. She is in the process of appealing the verdict.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Liu Mingying, 74, was first arrested at home on February 29, 2020, after the police saw her distributing Falun Gong informational materials on surveillance cameras. She was released the next day and put under house arrest.
Li Xiang, the deputy director of the Domestic Security Office, summoned her on December 3, 2020, and released her that evening on bail. Li informed her on December 16 that they had submitted her case to the Kaijiang County Procuratorate. The prosecutor summoned her twice for questioning, first on December 23, 2020, and then on February 2, 2021.
On February 3, Li arrested Ms. Liu at home. Her arrest was approved in the afternoon.
Ms. Liu made two appearances in the Kaijiang County Court, first on March 23 and then on July 19. The prosecution evidence included 106 flash drives with information about Falun Gong, seven media players that she used to play the Falun Gong exercise music, as well as her Falun Gong books and other informational materials confiscated from her home.
The judge sentenced Ms. Liu to five and a half years and fined her 20,000 yuan on October 27.
This is the second time that Ms. Liu has been sentenced for practicing Falun Gong since the onset of the persecution. She was previously sentenced to six years in 2009 by the same Kaijiang County Court.
