(Minghui.org) A middle school math teacher in Quzhou County, Handan City, Hebei Province, was released on bail on September 22, 2020, after a local Procuratorate returned her case for practicing Falun Gong due to insufficient evidence.
Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, is an ancient spiritual and meditation discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Gao Jiuyun was arrested on February 18, 2020, after being reported for posting information about Falun Gong and the coronavirus pandemic. Another practitioner, Ms. Hu Lianxiang, who was arrested with her, was later released after being found to have high blood pressure. The police later took Ms. Hu to the hospital for another physical examination, but she failed it and was rejected admission again.
Ms. Gao was sent to Handan City No. 3 Detention Center.
The Quzhou County Procuratorate approved Ms. Gao’s arrest and forwarded her case to the higher level Congtai District Procuratorate in Handan City, which initially refused to take the case, but accepted it after the lower Procuratorate tried a second time.
The Congtai District Procuratorate returned Ms. Gao’s case in mid-August and the police decided to release her on bail shortly after.
While Ms. Gao was still in detention, her lawyer was denied his right to review her case documents, and he also met with obstacles when he tried to visit her in the detention center. The detention center first denied his visit with the excuse of the pandemic, then demanded that the lawyer make an appointment the second time he went there. When the lawyer visited the detention center the third time, after making an appointment, the detention center said their computer was broken and couldn't verify his appointment. On the fourth time the lawyer went, he was finally allowed to meet with Ms. Gao through a video chat.
