(Minghui.org) Mr. Liu Dapeng’s family was never given any update on his case status after the Yushu City, Jilin Province resident was arrested on August 6, 2020 for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. They recently found out from the local Dehui Court’s website that Mr. Liu had been secretly sentenced to a three-year prison term on August 31, 2020.
Mr. Liu’s family called the court and confirmed the verdict. But the court refused to reveal other information about his case.
Mr. Liu, 59, was arrested twice within four months in 2020. On April 1, 2020, he and his wife Ms. Li Chunhuan were reported for distributing Falun Gong materials. The police monitored them for two days and arrested them on April 3. Their computer, cellphones, and Falun Gong books were confiscated. Although the police later returned their computer and cellphones, they refused to return their Falun Gong books.
The couple was locked onto metal chairs in the police station and interrogated. The police put Mr. Liu on criminal detention and gave Ms. Li five days of detention. After the local detention center refused to accept them due to the coronavirus epidemic, the police changed Mr. Liu’s condition to one-year bail. He and Ms. Li were released on April 5.
After the couple was taken back into custody on August 6, the police soon submitted Mr. Liu’s case to the Dehui City Procuratorate, which proceeded to formally approved his arrest. He was detained at the Yushu City Detention Center. Ms. Li was released after she was found to have Hepatitis B. It’s not clear whether she has been sentenced.
Prior to Mr. Liu’s latest sentencing, he served eleven years in Shiling Prison between 2002 and 2011, also for practicing Falun Gong.
