Jilin Woman Tried Without Lawyer Present

April 13, 2016 |   By a Minghui correspondent in Jilin Province, China

(Minghui.org) A Jilin woman was tried on March 29, 2016 without her lawyer present. The judge adjourned the hearing without announcing a verdict. Ms. Liu Shuyan, 60, was arrested last December for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline being persecuted by the communist regime.

After her arrest, her lawyer was denied access to her case files by the Yushu City Procuratorate and the Yushu City Court in Liaoning Province. The lawyer's request to represent Ms. Liu was denied by the judge.

The court subsequently denied her daughter's request to defend her in place of her lawyer. Her daughter and son were not allowed to enter the courtroom at all, so they were left to protest outside the courthouse.

Only Ms. Liu's mother, in her 80s, and a relative were present at the trial.

Ms. Liu had previously been detained, tortured, and sent to forced labor for refusing to renounce her faith.
