Ms. Wu was illegally arrested for speaking out about Falun Gong on May 24, 2006. Officers from the Changan Police Station ransacked her home and confiscated her computer, printer, and various Falun Gong materials. Her husband, Mr. Ma Jiang, an employee of the Liming Company, was arrested the same day on his way home from work.

Ms. Wu was sent to the Shenyang Detention Center, while Mr. Ma was incarcerated at the Bakeshu Detention Center in Dadong District. As a result, the couple's middle-school-aged daughter and Ms. Wu's elderly father lost their livelihood support.

Ms. Wu was subsequently sentenced to seven years in prison and incarcerated in Ward No. 7 of the Liaoning Women's Prison. As a result of prolonged abuse in the prison, she developed ascites in 2012.

After learning that Ms. Wu was dying, the prison administration admitted her to a hospital, notified her family, and then walked away, shirking all responsibility.

The six-plus years of physical and mental torment in the prison severely damaged Ms. Wu. She was finally able to return home and be with her family, but unfortunately her peaceful life was short-lived, as six or seven police officers soon came to her home to threaten her.

The threats caused Ms. Wu to fall back into a state of extreme terror, and her condition rapidly deteriorated. Ascitic fluid quickly accumulated, and her abdomen became as big as that of a late-term pregnant woman. She could not lie down or sleep.

The police continued harassing Ms. Wu at home for five months. They put pressure on her family members, and tracked and threatened Falun Gong practitioners who came to take care of her.

Ms. Wu died at 9:55 a.m. on June 2, 2013. She is survived by her father, who is in his eighties, and her husband and daughter.
