Ms. Hao Lianqin

Ms. Hao was taken into custody on December 31, 2011, by officials from the Harbin City Police Department. Around 7:00 a.m. that day, more than 20 police officers broke into her home. They kicked her, her husband, and the guests who were visiting to the ground. They ransacked her home and confiscated Falun Gong books and many of her personal belongings, including a computer, printers, discs, and over 6,000 yuan in cash. Ms. Hao was taken to the Harbin No. 2 Detention Center that same night.

Ms. Hao is 56 this year. Before she practiced Falun Gong, she had very poor health, couldn’t take care of herself, and frequently had to go to the hospital. After she got married, her husband had to look after everything for her. Because of her health, she could not fulfill her duties to her mother-in-law either.

After she began practicing Falun Gong, all her illnesses disappeared. She became healthy physicially and benefited mentally. She took care of all the housework and looked after her husband and her mother-in-law kindly and thoughtfully. Her husband was happy to see these changes. Whenever there was a holiday, Ms. Hao went to visit her mother-in-law and brought delicious food and cooked meals for her. Seeing all of the wonderful changes, her mother-in-law grinned from ear to ear and often told her neighbors, “Falun Gong is good! It is because she practices Falun Gong that my son’s wife recovered!”

After Ms. Hao was arrested, the guards severely tortured her and attempted to force her to give up her belief. Due to the brutal torture, she had a relapse of the illness she had prior to practicing Falun Gong and was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment. The arrest and abuse has been a terrible blow for her family. Her mother, who is in her 80s, can't eat or sleep well and misses her very much. Her husband no longer smiles, as he has to go on without his wife to care for him. He has been in a deep depression and longs for his wife’s safe return.

On May 10, 2012, the Daoli District Court in Harbin City put Ms. Hao and another practitioner, Ms. Wang Zuyun, on trial. The court officials ignored their lawyers’ defense and sentenced Ms. Hao to seven years of imprisonment and Ms. Wang to eight years.
